  • The Dayton 12" classic woofer

I was given a pair of the Dayton classic 12" woofers. I'm trying to figure out some kind of project to use them in. I looked on WinISD and chose "Dayton 12" from the driver database. It recommended a vented box size of 2.521 cu ft. (at 33.85). Checking the driver parameters it was using, they are quite different from the ones listed at the PE website for that woofer. Punching in the numbers currently listed with the driver, recommends a vented box size of 5.802 cu ft at tuning freq of 24.54. Quite a big difference, which do you use?

Or better yet, are there any existing successful designs using this woofer? I've read enough around here to realize that designing a 3 way crossover that will sound good is pretty much hopeless for a beginner, even using the fancy crossover software.

If your talking the 12" classic 295-320 your probably closer with the 5.8 cuft box. I did some modelling and I think its best/intended purpose is in the bottom of a sealed 3 way design.

I wouldn't really bother making an enclosure of that size for these drivers. If you mount your pair in an isobaric configuration you can ~half the enclosure volume which would make using them vented more reasonable.

      BB6P is telling me put it in 2.0 cuft vented tuned to 30 Hz (2 x 2" x 8") for F3 = 38 - 40 Hz (measured vs. published) and F6 = 32 - 33 Hz.

I'd call that good to go for EconoWave in KD trapezoids, for example:

With the baffle in the stock recessed location, seems the cab volume is more like 1.6 cuft, actually, so in that configuration, it's tune to 34.5 Hz (2 X 2" X 7") for F3 = 44.9 Hz and F6 = 37.5 Hz using the published parameters.

Looks like it'll handle full 80 Watts down to 30 Hz in these alignments.

Re: The Dayton 12" classic woofer

I have not used the Classic 12" but recently completed a build using the Classic 18".

It is a simple design and is pretty easy to build even for a novice like me. I got the idea for the design from the "Inverted Wedge" plans located on the Decware website. If you would like more info please let me know.

WinISD (beta) is NOT using any current Dayton 12" driver data. I'd plug in parms from the 2009 catalog to model it. All you really need is Vas, Qts, and Fs.
