  • Dayton RSS315HF-4 12" dropped. Is it broke ?????

Does anyone know what could be wrong with this sub?

I dropped the sub and when I went to play it again, it has no bass. It sounds like a 2" woofer with "nice" mid range(no xover).

When I xover say 100hz very faint sound. I did a frequency sweep in the box and it starts in at 80hz or so and gets a lot louder as frequency increases.

Measured ohms just the speaker = 3.6

Visually it looks fine, just a few scratches. I believe it hit the floof on the magnet side about a 3ft drop on tile.

Any ideas? Where should I go from here?

Disconnect woofer from box, amp, wires etc. Then try a flashlight battery or even better a 9 volt battery. If cone moves smartly you are OK, if not then you damaged it.

Maybe you shifted the magnet when you dropped it (the magnets are just glued on with epoxy in most cases), so your driver is essentially fubared. See if the cone moves inward and outward without rubbing - it should move relatively freely. If it doesn't, then you goofed and the driver is ruined.

The voice coil is seized. I just had this happen to an RS180S woofer that got damaged in transit. It got hit on the frame, not the magnet....regardless, same result. Lots of midrange...zero bass, no cone movement.

Cry first, then use it as a big paper weight. OR, better yet, a big magnet to pick up nails in the garage!

No cone movement, but sounds like you are taping a plastic cup on the table waiting for a refill(one sound each time connected to battery 9v).

          jakeb,
Is it shot, if in fact it fits the same case as yours? $140 driver, is it repairable? What work needs to be done?

            Sorry

After closer examination the magnet does appear to have shifted approx 1/8"

            Thanks Taterworks.

Cone feels stuck no movement. Guess it cant hurt to try and realign everything if it is essentially dead? To salvage something?

How to Fix? ps this woofer is kind of heavy!
You can't really fix this damage, unless a professional does it. The gap has to be aligned perfectly for best results.

I would prob. try to fix it, if it was mine.

If you want to see what you're doing, you'll most likely find it helpful to take the dust cap off (might have to cut it, try not to cut the cone).

Before you do that, you could just try to tap the magnet back where it was, if you need some help figuring out how to fix it in place once you get it re-positioned, let us know.

I suppose it is possible to move it through the back-plate using sticks or something non-ferrous, as it is a vented-gap.

Other than that, the dustcap would almost have to be removed, and it's inset into the cone. There is no lip to flat-adhere the cap, so you would have to cut it, and that's aluminum- not an easy task!

I just don't know how you could do this without sending it to a shop for repair, unless you don't mind having a goobery-looking dustcap.

At this point the voice coil may no longer be round, even if the magnet was recentered. It probably isn't worth it.

You could remove the magnet entirely and use it as a PR(Passive Radiator).

                        Thanks everyone for the input.

                        I will attempt to repair.

There seems to be a small gap between the magnet and frame, I can see through in places. Does anyone know if this is just epoxy on or screwed too?

If coil is out of round, is there replacements available? Anyone ever have luck getting parts from Dayton Direct?

                        or

If coil is not round, round it out and it will be functional, to at least toss it in my car or sell! (of course mention the damage)

put it up on ebay as is. tell the truth and list at 65.00 buy it now only. listing it for 30 days cost 35 cents. you may get a buyer. after a week list at 55. after 2 weeks list at 45. you get the idea. say a diyer can make a perfect passive radiator for the dayton rss. don't lay a hand to it. it only costs you 35 cents to list it for 30 days. if the 65 55 45 plan sounds wrong pick your own numbers
