After the Triska sub and Tritrix MT's for my computer audio was done, my wife said, "hey, what about me?"

So Bill, (Schneider), I am totally ripping off your ideas. I hope you don't mind. :D
But please do not expect anything near Bill's level of engineering. You know, because he's an engineer. And, I'm not.

I have decided to surface mount both woofer and tweeter. This is mainly due to the fact that I did NOT want to purchase a 45mm forstner bit exclusivley for this project (like Bill did... ), that and the modeling for the enclosure done by Paul C was for surface mounted drivers.

Just today I cut the bevels and installed hurricanes nuts. More pics to follow soon..

Is that 3/4" stock? If so, you did compensate for the additional volume, right? ;)

The XO looks very nice and clean. Much nicer than mine.

Nice work. Glad to see someone else likes to go crazy with biscuits. It makes gluing up a breeze. Keep us posted on the progress so we can rip off your ideas.

Kidding aside, Bill posted a scan of the conversions he made for the 3/4 stock, and it seemed accurate to me.

Is there a special tool for biscuiting?

What are the benefits? Stronger enclosure? (sorry to semi-hijack....)

Mmmm, biscuits. A biscuit cutter is required to cut biscuit slots. Biscuits help a bit with alignment, but there is still some slop in the joint. I use them sometimes.

The glue is suppose to swell the biscuits for a tight fit.

A well-photographed build-thread - cool! I feel like I'm there without all the sawdust.

It's all Paul's fault that we're all building these! ;) It's an inexpensive and easy build, so I suppose that it doesn't take much dithering to jump in.

I like your crossover layout. In hindsight, I should have put mine onto just one compact board like yours. It would have saved some time.

They're very enjoyable; you may find yourself wanting to trade with the wife.. you can use some excuse like "oh honey.. they need tweeking" or something.. Definitely a sensation; there are now 3 pair of these running in the office here.

Yeah but, if like I did when gluing up my big Dayton 8 boxes, you clamp a joint a bit out of alignment, the swelling biscuit will not move the joint into alignment.

Biscuits allowed me to glue these big boxes up all at once save one side, but my inattention left me with one back corner about 1/32" out of fair. Just saying you can't depend on biscuits to auto-align your joints.

Your right. I miss understood what you were saying. I have also not had the joiner exactly 90 degrees to the piece and this makes the slot a hair off center. This can be enough that you can't get the joint to line up.

The Ryobi (in the second picture) is the biscuit cutter. It cuts the 1/2 moons you see in pic 3 by plunging in a small circular saw blade. The actual football shaped beech biscuits are in the Porter Cable plastic jar in pic 3. The biggest benefit is that your joint will stay in alignment making it easier to test fit or glue and clamp without slipping or falling apart.
Shear strength is improved some with biscuits but with todays glues strengh is not really a big issue. It also gives more glue surface to the joint. As stated before, the biscuits still allow some movement to the joint so it is fine tuned as it is clamped. I originally bought my biscuit cutter to make some table tops. Edge gluing boards together with biscuits is a joy after trying to use dowels for alignment.
(Of course any woodworker can spot that these pictures have been faked. No shop is ever this clean.)

I'm interested to see how the sound compares to the Tritrix MT. I've AB'd the Tritrix MTM sealed version against the Overnights and I liked the Tritrix much better. The Overnights played lower than the tritrix but the tritrix was overall a much more balanced representation of the sound, it made the Overnight's bass sound kind of bloated. The tweeter of the Tritrix is in a whole different league IMO. Hearing what your thoughts are would be interesting.

I would never have guessed the difference in sound had I not listened to them side by side...the Overnights are a great little speaker.

Baffles complete, ready to attach...



Back rabbited, and removable panels shaped. Next up is finding the right placement of the port, and post holes for the signal.




About ready to glue baffles on, using a small brad nail on two opposing ends, clipped off with a pair of dykes to keep it from moving during glue set.

...ponder, why do us biscuit types not use biscuits on the baffle?.... hmmm..


I count 5 different brands of clamps... I need more...




I know this build has been done many times, and my methods are far from being worthy of teaching, but I know how much I get from viewing build threads of all types and quality. An idea can come from weirdest place.

I've yet to buy any parts for a crossover, let alone put one together, so I have a quick question. Do any of those crossover parts need to be modified after you buy them? I thought I read somewhere that there might be a need to unwind some parts of a crossover to get to the correct values? Do these speakers need anything like that?

Sorry for the ignorant question, I'm just curious.
