    Christmas project *I have pictures!*

    Here's what I made my sister for Christmas, a little shelf system I call it. I bought a cheap sony dvd player, a t-amp, and used the 4 inch bamboo cone full rangers from Tang Band that I got at the tent sale this summer for $20 a piece. I just brought it up to my room, I'm gonna hook it up to my computer which has a signal generator from WinISD, and gonna let 50 Hz do its work for a while. I'll probably go clean up my mess in my garage. Don't worry, I'll post a new picture in a few hours with the grill on and the electronics installed. Here's hoping it works!!

      I had plans for something similar for my daughter! I hope that works alright for her.
      Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

        Holy cow mother of our Lord!!! This was my first design by myself, and I just want to say I'm really happy right now! Designing these, I knew where my sister was going to put this (on the bottom shelf of a bookcase separating her kitchen and living room). I (here goes) did not use and filters or crossovers on these. She's always going to be off axis, so what's the use of taming the highs? And so, knowing that, I stood almost perpendicular to these, and the vocals just absolutly melt in my mouth. I tuned these to about 85 Hz, and I can't believe the base I'm hearing from a 4 inch driver. This was also my first ported design. I've always asociated ported with boomy, and these are nothing but. Acurate, clean, smooth, whatever lingo you use. All in all a success for about $150 total. Thanks to all those who, not knowingly, helped me with this. I've done a lot of reaserch on past posts the last 2 months. Comments?

            Wow, that looks beautiful! Was your sister excited to see it? I really like the front baffles, nice contrast with the rest of the unit.

            I made a similar unit to that for under my mom's counter in the kitchen. I used two 4" Tang band full rangers without any filters also, I always and still do think it sounds really nice... bass and all. I bet your unit sounds pretty good. I think those TB drivers are alright!

              What did your sister make for you? :p

              Is the entire structure MDF or some other material?

                    Very nice! I'm willing to bet it's much better sounding than any iPod dock you could find at Target ;) I'm sure she'll love it since it was made by you!

                    Are the white pieces going to be covered with grill cloth? I kind of like them as is. It makes the whole thing stand out.

                          good call on the design - now I bet you she puts them somewhere visible, though :D

                          also, vented alignments get a bad rap because the ones in most retail speakers are tuned like the R&D guys are drunk. that, or people like to hear boomy, overexaggerated bass .. hmm ..

                          first time I heard a vented alignment in a good speaker were WATT/Puppys - oh my, was I impressed. say what you will about Wilson designs, they sure build a solid cabinet. sealed speakers have their place, but a well-tuned vented alignment is a grand thing.

                            Yes, it's 100% mdf, and no, I'm not putting any grill cloth on. I bought a yard of white cloth, but as I was making them, I thought it would look cool to cover up my screws and see the ports and speakers. I chamfered the edges around the cutouts too. I absolutly LOVE my new porter cable router and jasper circle cutter. The finishing was a sinch, since I took some time and reaserched the best way to finish. I sprayed a layer of shelac on all edges and nail holes, then used wood filler to cover them, then sanded, then sprayed entire unit with shelac, sanded, and then buddy did the paint go on smooth and nothing showed. Thanks to whoever enlightened me on finishing.

                            By the way, as a preview, here's my next, much more complicated design. I will use the PE Usher 701 kit and build these cabinets myself. I cannot wait. I'll be sure to start a build thread and track my progress. Toodles, and Merry Christmas!

                              Perhaps you should consider jkim's 8945P/Peerless HDS pairing ... it probably costs about the same, and uses a better tweeter, IMO.
