  • Your Favorite Speaker

Just to get an idea on what people have heard and what there likes are... If someone else was paying for it what speaker or speakers would you buy.

Out of what I have ever had the pleasure of listening to, I would go with the Dynaudio Sapphire. I have heard many hi end speakers and to date they have the finest imaging and sound stage I have ever heard, and the bass was Right on.

Now if I was throwing a party and wanted to shake the place, I would go with a set of Cerwin Vega's with 15's in them. I haven't kept up with their model numbers but I have heard a few that made it hard to breathe when they were cranked up...I am sure there is some commercial or High end stuff that is better, but out of what I have heard, I would have to go with the vegas...

I was disappointed with the Wilson Watt Puppies and the B&W 801D's. However, I blame the idiots that ware playing poorly recorded music played way too loud... I would love to have a chance to do a serious audition with better music...

I have a set of the 15 vegas in a two way with a bullet tweeter. I think the version with the 12's in them had a hair tighter base. My buddy had a set. I will say the Mini Statement blow both away hands down. Can't imagine what the Statements would do.

I should say I walk away from a section with the Mini's without my ears ringing also

I keep looking for something that I could change to make them better, and haven't found anything.

it should only be about your ears... I once had a guy tell me he had the finest ears in NY....Like that could be measured. I am sure some people hears what others can not, but I have found that what I thought was great was garbage once I heard some high end stuff. Then I started to realize that some hi End guys don't like bass... Our own ears are all that matters...

            Re: Your Favorite Speaker

My first taste of musical clarity came from a pair of Wisdom Audio M-75's. Even though they cost $75k/pr I would have been happy buying them. If, as you asked, someone else were footing the bill the M-75's would be my first choice.
My second (and VERY close) option would be the line arrays that Mr. Griffin displayed at the Great Plains Audio Fest here in Tulsa X years ago.
Both of these speakers have made very lasting impressions with me.

Yeah, but which tweeter? Salk's site shows a ribbon.

That's the MDT33, and I also agree it was one of my top-ten faves.

No particular order (not my own, so no bias):

                  BESL 'System 5'
                  Bagby/Salk 'Archos' (pictured above)
                  Paul K/SelahAudio 'Cantilena'
                  Jon B 'Spassvogels'
                  Dan Neubecker's 'HOSS'
                  Jeff B's 'Davids' (original revision)
                  Pjay's 'XT 2-way tower'
                  Bob Cordell's 'M3'
                  CurtC/JimHoltz 'Statements'
Ken Ahern's 'Vifa PL 3-way DCR towers'

...and an honorable mention goes to Darren Kuzma's 'Collossi', as those were just plain cool and very capable of everything!
I'm sure this will likely change in the future...

                    Best sound = Quad 989
Most disappointing = one of the Focal JM Lab Utopia line (sorry I don't remember which model).
Most surprisingly = Reference 3a (an 8" two way with only one cap for the crossover), very good sound.

When I first made the speaker for myself I used the Morel MDT33. Jim was at my house and liked the speaker. I let him take them with him. He bought them and then re-did the cabinet, but kept the mid and tweeter and I tweaked the crossover. Later, since most of Jim's speakers use ribbon tweeters, and that is his personal preference, I redesigned it for the ribbon. The frequency response, even the crossover point and slopes, are almost identical; however, ribbons do sound a little different than domes. Everyone that has heard these with the ribbon has been happy with them. Jim can do either version for someone though. What Pete heard were the originals with the Morel tweeter.

Shahinian Diapason's, which I actually own. I was lucky enough to get a pair used off of Audiogon for $1,50 plus shipping, which is pretty good considering that they list for $18k/pr.

I need 2. I still have yet to find a tower that sounds like a stand mount and vice-versa.

                            1. Sonus Farber Gunare Homage

                            2. PSB stratus Gold i. I am unsure if for under 10K you will find a speaker that better defines a full sized tower.

If I had them... I think I still would be doing this. :D

In college while selling stereo equipment part time, I helped a guy set up a system in his purpose built listening room. Two pair of Bozak Concert Grands with all MAC electronics and an LP12 table. (32 tweeters, 8 midranges, 16 - 12" woofers)

He had students from the UF engineering dept come in for measurements and to handle acoustic treatments.

That may not be the best system for all types of music but for acoustic, it was impressive.
