    Any opinions on Adcom equipment?

    Specifically:

    GFA 5400 Amplifier

    GTP 350 Tuner Preamp

I'm a fan of their amps...never tried the preamps or receivers. My GFA-7000's been running strong since 1995.

      Anyone else?

Who would buy both for $350?

If you don't have to pay any shipping, that seems like the market price $250 + $100. My GTP-500 has worked for 20 years now. Never heard one of the Adcom mosfet amps, but I bet it is nice gear.

          Re: Adcom

ADCOM amps = good quality OK/fine sounding amplifiers. Not the highest rung, but up there.

ADCOM tuner/preamps = not good quality, not good sounding. Not the lowest rung, but there are better options.

I would recommend an Adcom preamp (GFP-555, GFP-565) any day. But the tuner pre amps have a bad reputation. Definitely a step down.

I have had a GFA-555II and an GFA-2535, both of which I thought were nice, but ran a little hot. Otherwise, nice amps.

FWIW, the one and only - Nelson Pass, designer of the Adcom GFA 5800 and GFA 555 responded on another forum about low impedence capabilities.

It's been some time since I've posted here. But I think this is the right question for this audience. I'm just curious if anyone knows of a measurement work up for the Adcom GFA-5800- the sort of thing you would see Stereophile's J.A. doing in the tan boxes in the equipment review. I have the...

Some of the large Adcom amps are prone to leaky caps. Be sure to take a look under the hood once in a while.

NP's design, the Adcom GFP-750 is a very nice sounding preamp.

That was the first run of GFA-555's. The cap manufacturer they used for those amps had some serious QC problems, not entirely Adcom's fault.

                  Re: Adcom

I have a 5400 and GTP-450 combo. The amp is very powerful and can handle lower impedance just fine. There are better sounding amps but you're not going to know the difference if you don't have something to compare it to. It's much better than most receivers.

The GTP is a different story. The tuner has fair reception but good quality when it can pull in the signal. My unit has the tuner bleeding through the every other source except the external processor input. The bleed was only noticeable when the source is quiet (like between tracks on a CD) and it's very low, but it's there.

I use mine for my desk system and there I use the volume only between off and the first tick. The linearity in the pot and signal is very poor in that range. It's not that my speaker are efficient either. I think the GFA has more gain. I've never had volume above 9-o'clock. No speaker I've ever had, nor my ears, could take it.

I wish my Luxman integrated amp with tube pre-amp didn't release it's magic smoke. I'd much rather be using that.

I don't think I'd pay $350 for that pair. I'd say $250 would be more appropriate. They are quite old and really only mid-fi, at best.

                    Re: Adcom

I am presently running an Onkyo TX-SV535 @ 80 wpc or using that as a preamp to a Carver M400a 200wpc cube amp. No spl issues with either.

How would they compare to the GFA 5400?
Is the GFA 5400 worth $245?

As many other have said - I like their amps. I have owned the GFA 535, GFA 545, GFA 555, and two GFA 2535s. imho I think the best value of the lot was the GFA 535.

My first set-up with Adcoms was a tri-amp speaker system using the 555, 545 and 535. Later I had the opportunity to pick up 2535s from a guy who was moving some stuff for a song. I used them in several different systems and eventually passed them on to my son...

What are the differences between the 555 and the 5800? Both are similar power, 5800 is mosfet and weighs 50% more. Are both stable at 2 ohms?

I don't know that much about the series but I think the 5800 is newer.
