Audax Sold Out!! What to do....

I built the Audax HT speakers a while back. Through some abuse, wear and tear, etc., I decided I was going to rebuild them. A couple of the drivers need replaced. Imagine my dismay when I discovered they're no longer available!!

My original idea was to make 5 of the center speakers to use all around. I think for the price, this speaker is hard to beat!

So, what wold be a good system to look at to replace the Audax system? I would like to keep the cost somewhat comparable to what these cost.

My room is a dedicated room 17'X26' with 8.5' ceiling. I am currently running a Sony STR-DA 50 ES receiver. (I know, dinosaur, but it works great!).

I am currently only looking for 5 speaker set, haven't decided on a sub design yet.

I guess what I'm looking for is something that has roughly the same performance of the Audax kit. I've spent the better part of the day searching the web, and haven't found a lot to choose from. Does anyone have a link to HT speaker plans? I can spend more than the Audax's cost, but the sky is NOT the limit!

I have above average woodworking ability, and am not afraid to take on something a little more advanced. I looked on the projects page here, but didn't see anything I like.

Most of the DIY forums seem to be sub oriented. And while I'm looking at sub ideas, I need a set of speakers to replace what I currently have. What's everyone building these days?

The Audax drivers used that design have been unavailable to us DIY'ers for a number of years.

The good news is I believe you will find that there have been some significant advances in driver design in the intervening years. -And the pricing can be significantly better as well.

If you've been out of pocket when it comes to DIY designs, we have seen significant improvements in the quality of DIY designs in the last several years. This is due to both the availability of affordable software tools, and to the increase in design cognizance of the DIY group as a whole.

I also noticed that Madisound has recently started getting some of the old Audax drivers back in stock. A few different tweeters, the PR170 pro midwoofer, the 5.25" Aerogel woofers, and the small carbon fiber woofers.

The Microbe is a bass overachiever for it's size. I would not worry about that.

It's been awhile, and I'd have to dig out the old catalog, but what was the cost on the old Audax HT kits? If they were under $300 for the pair, then the "MAX" 8" 2-way I've been working at might be suitable for size/cost/sensitivity.. I have a couple more things to try on the tweeter, and then they should be finished:

There are also a multitude of Dayton RS-HT kits for sale at PE, or you can also use a proven DIY design. There are many here at PE, HTguide, etc... The RS-Modula by Jon Marsh seems ot be very popular for about the same price point I listed above, but you only get a 7" 2-way with that.

The Dr. K/Natalie P is the MTM alternative.

I have a hard time thinking the microbe can produce as much sound as the Audax's do. The Max-8 looks intriguing. Do you have a write-up about it anywhere?

Not yet, as I am still finalizing the design. It won't be long. There is a thread for the build, but it's not completed either:
