  • Need opinions/experienced opinions on ribbon tweeters....

    Hi Guys,

I am interested in anyone's opinion on benefits/performance differences between the Fountek Neo CD3 tweeter (rectangular faceplate version), and the Aurum Cantus G2 ribbon tweeter. Besides there being about $100 price difference per unit, what can anyone tell me about the Aurum Cantus G2 and how it might stack up performance/sound quality wise with the Fountek unit. I have NO experience with either one....limited experience with ribbons in general, BUT I have been perusing the Aurum Cantus site, and found a model of monitor that I find visually appealing and somewhat unique from the regular rectangles..... Especially interesting was the use of Mappa Burl side panels.... Anyway, can anyone tell me their honest assessment of the two ribbons in question. I am going to have some significant $$ coming back from the TAX man, and I want to start a couple of "up-scale" projects instead of my usual "budget" minded stuff.......However, even saying that statement, I don't want to pay more than I have to for the "same, or nearly same" performance....which is why I am posting for honest opinions. Is the G-2 overpriced for what you get, or is it that much better than the apparently similar Neo-CD3?
One project is already under way, with the planning of construction....Thanks to Jeff B. for starting me out, and for any additional help later...just in case I forget to thank you later. I am building the Continuums, and I will try to fully document the build with pix....gonna try to do justice to the cabinetry...I have some really gorgeously grained East-Indian Applewood veneer that is just screaming to get pasted to a nice speaker.
The second project is going to be fashioned after the Aurum Cantus

Allright, you ribbon guys....enlighten me and lead me to the path that rocks.

    Best regards to all, John
If it doesn't fit right the first time, you obviously need to use a larger hammer. :p

Fountek's offering is better. Better dispersion, lower distortion.
    I am trolling you.

I own CD3 CD2 and 2gsi (not 2G) Horizontal off axis is ok on all of them, vertical off axis sucks on all of them as well. While I don't own G2 and cannot speak about it from my own experience, I will say this, if narrow vertical off axis is not an issue for you, then Neo CD2 is probably the best out of the bunch in terms of horizontal and non linear. They are all pain in the behind to work with, like high crossover point and sharp slopes. If you have a mid woofer or mid range that can be crossed high enough and can deal with finicky crossover then go for it.

        John-
The Founteks are also a *lot less fragile* than the AC competitors. The Fountek embeds the membrane in a protective screen assembly, which allows it to be a little more resilient in terms of air-pressure, directed/targeted air-flow, etc. You can damage an AC if the room is air-tight enough and slam a door I've a heard.

That said- I would get a Fountek for this sole-reason: durability.

The ribbons I have are an oem version made by AC. They don't hold up well to the vacuum cleaner...

I have the Fountek's on couple projects. Love them! My daughter poked a Xmas ornament hanger through screen and totally riped up the ribbon foil on one. I sent back to Madi and they fixed it up and sent it back the same day $30.00!

If you are looking for a topper tweeter to X at high points like 4-8 kHz the little 1.0 is perfect and selling for like $36.00 now!

Well, the opinions are all in and the Fountek's seem to get the nod.....thanks to everyone who had something useful to contribute to the decision. Hardier durability, AND $100 less per unit....how can I go wrong with that?

Can anyone elaborate as to the sonic qualities in comparison to typical dome tweeters? I am always partial to anything that will improve sound stage...I never heard a ribbon tweeter so I do not know anything about them.
