I'd love to see that driver out to 90 or further. It's got the best out to 40 I've seen, so it seems very promising. Sorta takes the econo out of it, but it looks like a lot easier to design around. Hard to tell w/o going to 90, but my best guess is that it would perform better than other options. You'll make up a bit of that expense with less crossover parts and less prototyping. It seems to me that a good break up character should not be too expensive to build. We just need more clever transducer designers willing to do all the prototyping and testing. It's something I'm actually looking into now--not suggesting I'm more clever.

It's a 10" that'll behave to ~3 kHz that's needed to mate with the QSC 122i, looks like to me....

The Lambda TD10 series is likely to behave just like the TD12, with wider dispersion and smooth response.

I've got my eye on an upcoming project using a modified 122i waveguide profile to load the RS28F paired with the TD10S.

Should make for a heck of a two-way.

              Well,

Figure the XO is about the same price, and the RS28F is a bit less than the compression driver, and you're only looking at an extra $200 for each stereo pair, but with plenty of low end (37Hz F3) in a 1.3 cu ft enclosure. The TD10S also has over 3x the Xmax of the Deltalite, and I'd wager quite a bit less non linear distortion as well.

Maybe not "econo" but I'd bet it would give the Deluxe version a run for the money.

                  A Venerable Vintage Update.

Stereophile's John Atkinson measured the Smaller Advent loudspeaker for Robert Reina's May, 2006 historical review:

One day last year, my friend Larry and I were talking about our college-fraternity days and loudspeakers. Those were four of the best years of my life. Strong friendships were formed, and ever since, we've kept in touch with most of our fraternity's brothers-in-heart. Ours was not a jock house, nor was it the last bastion of rampant male sexuality—it was, after all, an MIT frat house.

                  His conclusion:

But despite its relatively even balance through the midrange and low treble, the Advent's tweeter is a total underperformer compared with modern designs, and its cabinet is way too resonant.

SO, can we employ a modern compression driver and constant directivity waveguide to achieve the objectives vintage East Coast 2-way designs never quite accomplished?

Here's what I came up with.

I know, I'm pushing the tweeter pretty low, but the woofer just begs to be crossed at 1KHz.

                        Thanks, Pete!

I'll try that and run some polars to see how low this 6" square waveguide exhibits pattern control.

Atkinson found the vertical null of the stock design at 1.864 kHz, which would be consistent with vintage East Coast design practice: design woofers to roll off gracefully, and then bring the tweeter down to there. I'll confirm that when I open up the second one to verify that the woofers behave the same.

The piston diameter's only 7.625", yet I confirm the system has usable bass down to 30 Hz.

[Not real efficient, tho.... :p ]

                          Pete Schumacher,

Got any measurements preferably to 90 degrees or more? I'd love to see measurements of that driver. I'm hesitant to spend that much money on a guess--even when the guess is somewhat educated. I'd hate to get a big surprise after that outlay. That 122i is the last one Zilch posted, correct? The old PEWGs look pretty good mated to the venerable Selenium out to 90 degrees:

These are not mounted on a baffle and are equalized. I wish they had a better transfer into the throat(might be the cause of the high frequency raggedness).

                          Zilch,

do you believe that new PEWG would really load to 1kHz? That seems optimistic to me, but I have no experience with similar products.;)

No data yet, guesses based on Augerpro's testing.

I have a feeling they will be my next project once the Byzantiums are completed. Data will be forthcoming at that point.

Sure, I've run the JBL equivalent down to 800 Hz with an appropriate driver. You can see that the little 6" square one "loads" that low as well.

BUT, that's not the determinative parameter -- how low does it exhibit pattern control, and how does it sound down there? From the looks of it, Dayton either cloned the Pyle (on which we have data) or placed its own order with whomever in China makes them....
