  • Re: Flex Your PCD Mettle:

One is normalized, and one not. The one not is how it plays, dispersion-wise, as built. 3D3A Lab wants to minimize lateral reflections, which mess with their crosstalk-cancellation algorithm. Thus, this is a notably narrow-directivity speaker.

Toole suggests that wider dispersion is better suited for surrounds - the more reflections, the better. You want surround, the next one up is 90° x 90°. We can go as wide as 120° x 60° with single JBL PT waveguides, but beyond that, we have to double them up for 180° or wider....

is this what your were talking about with the 90x90? It appears to be the same size as the eminence.

I don't think I have ever quoted myself before, but what the heck. I just measured my existing cabinets and realized the old Vals will make perfect 'sub stands' for the Ewave HPB+. The CD will be at ear level while sitting. little vintage with a lot of new.
I am listening in mono to my one prototype and still cannot get over just how good this 'kludge' sounds. I can't wait to get the tweaked cabinet done and playing.

The one I have done sounds pretty good - thanks to Zilch (I am fortunate to live an hour away so I get to visit the master in person.)
But the cabinet is really a huge compromise and needs to go so I am thinking the not so econo-HP plus my 2235's in B380 sub clones my be the way to go.

I ordered parts to build up a pair, one each of two variants, which should be here by the end of this week; I'm working on the baffles now. After trying a bunch of 220Ti, I may notch that spike at the top down flat. Once those are done and posted here, I'll eMail them again.

Thus far, they are ignoring communications from Zilch, but I have resources. Ken Kantor lives down the street from me, and I consider him a pal. I'll invite him over for a listen and inquire if he knows that group well enough to give them a "HEY!"

Their actual requirements are somewhat indeterminate, but if they want a pair of prototypes to evaluate, I'll send them along, yes. Seems to me these have major advantages over Geddes Nathan, primary among them being even narrower constant-directivity (these are 60° x 40° waveguides) and an open-source design anyone can build from off-the-shelf components for 1/5 the cost with no "commercial interest" stigma, assuming they'll do a credible job.

If on the basis of a preliminary evaluation in their acoustic chamber they want me to step it up, there are real-deal narrow-dispersion PT waveguides already on the shelf here that can shine like an acoustic laser, if required. With BMS 4555 on a pair of those, we can virtually guarantee there will be zero SQ issues.... :p

Even nicer in the Dayton curved-side cabs (I have a piano black pair), but we've certainly moved up a notch or two from roadkill here.... :D

The entire drill's about enabling others to do cool stuff with the concepts here. I'm always pleased to see DIYers running with what I detail, but it's just as gratifying watching others explore their own approaches, as well, having broken down the barriers, kicked open the gates, and pushed them through....

                          • EconoWave Mini S-6 - First Listen

Y'all know I don't do "How's it sound?" and I'm certainly not into hype, but in the course of gathering .frd and .zma data last night, I couldn't resist hooking it up to the prototype crossover sitting on the test stand from the previous S-8 builds for a quick listen.

OH, MAN! The big boys with custom drivers in their arsenal certainly know how to make this happen. I put Celestion CDX1-1731 on the little 6" square waveguide, dialed the L-pad flat within +/- 2.5 dB, and now can't wait to get this little guy into PCD and optimized....

It looks so good I am considering giving up my mini 4430 project and going with the taller cabs for 2.5 way. They really look sweet, Zilch.

Clearly, you like the Celestions. Can't hide that. :p
