1) what are the dimension for e-waves? do they varied by versions (e.g deluxe, standard, sr, etc.)?

2) are the cabs ported, sealed? doesn't matter?

3) are all e-wave crossovers active?

Has anyone tried the new MCM cast frame professional woofers in an econowave? I bought a pair of the 8" (http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/55-2960) during one of their daily deals for $11 each (normally only $20.49) about a month ago. Build quality is excellent for the price. I mounted them in a 0.5 cu ft sealed box and ran them full range with a 1" dome taking over the highs with a single capacitor and padding resistor in line. Considering the circumstances, they sounded great - much, much better than I expected. The first thing that came to mind is that these could be the bottom of an excellent low cost econowave variation. The larger woofers in this line are still very inexpensive ($34 for the 12") and I assume exhibit similar build quality and performance. Has anyone tried these in this application?

1) Stick with the same baffle width and driver spacing if you are using one of the fine-tuned crossover designs in this thread.

2) Depends on the driver (and application).

3) No, most folks use passive crossovers.

Given the sudden increase in price of the Eminence Neo stuff, there's hardly any value there. Look towards Acoustic Elegance, JBL, B&C or other Pro midwoofers as alternatives. There's lots of proven Ewave 'variants' out there using these drivers, yoiu just gotta look around the net.

If you haven't looked already, the Dayton PA-310 models well for EWave. Like most pro drivers, it doesn't go real low, but is pretty smooth beyond the EWave crossover (~1600Hz) and can get loud. Not terribly expensive either.

Zilch used the PE trapezoidal cab on multiple builds to keep it simple. It wasn't optimal size or tuned for bass response for any particular driver. The crossover really doesn't care (much) if you use a bigger (or smaller) box as long as the baffle width and driver spacing is the same.

The design is flexible which is why you will see vintage cabs and/or vintage woofers thrown into the mix. Unfortunately this means you can drive yourself nuts looking for the "correct" answer when the answer is "it depends". So pick a budget, pick an application (full range or use w/sub), pick a size (8" mini through 15" monster), pick a cabinet (recycled or custom), and pick new or used/vintage drivers. Now you can start :D

Good luck. This can be a very educational process as you sort through the choices and compromises associated with each choice.

If you had to recommend some general enclosure sizes based on the general woofer sizes, what would they be?

Examples:

Would a 1.25 cu ft enclosure pair well with a decent number of pro 10's?

And maybe 1.75 cu ft for 12's?

Or do you think they can go smaller due to the fact that most people will be using subwoofers?
