Re: CAST YOUR VOTE: Phase plugs AL or Brass

I wonder if this possibly represents a small change in the Dayton Reference line from black plastic to something else or if this would be a completely new lineup. If I had saw a same design as what I had but the Dayton Reference drivers had polished brass phase plugs I might be a bit jealous.

I'm surprised at you all, trading price and performance for aesthetics. Aluminum all the way.

Re: CAST YOUR VOTE: Phase plugs AL or Brass

All else being equal, the brass plug will have less than half of the conductivity of the aluminum one, so some performance difference will be likely unless other aspects of the motor design are changed as well...

Granted, that this is only one facet of a driver design, but I choose the material that will provide the most symmetrical magnetic field and lowest driver distortion for this particular motor.

        -Whichever one that is... :D

I'm with Shawn- BLACK CHROME! would look the best.

From your choices, Brass is a metal not normally used, and will definitely be set off aesthetically from other manufacturers, minus PHY. Brass is also a very heavy alloy, and could provide some mass-damping methinks. I agree about it being less useful in terms of magnetic relationships and such with the motor, but it would look very cool!

          Choice #3- anodized-red aluminum.

Later, and thank you for asking us!

I know I already voted, but, how about this?

A Brass-color, anodized, aluminum phase plug?

My thinking too Pete ... they could offer whatever anodized colors they choose if they went with aluminum.

In the spirit - how about a choice of metallic red or blue? Thus you can show your political affiliation with the color of your....phase plug.... har har!

Brass! I have some FR125's and agree with Dirk - they do look nice.

                    Cheers / Robert

                      2. Copper
                      3. Whats the difference if it gets anodized black?

My choice is light black if it is not too black, otherwise a medium black tending to antique black.

ROFL so after grilling us about two choices "Aluminum or Brass", you choose black.... But not too Black.... You're funny.

I choose Brass. Make it copper and call it a distortion killing phase plug/shorting ring. Then you can charge lots of $$.

AL would look good with new Vifa metal dome tweeters. Not many copper dome tweeter so from a purely cosmetic look.

                                Interchangeable

Actually, It would be kind of cool if there were a threaded insert in the pole of the drivers and the phase plug could be unscrewed and painted/finished to our individual liking. I guess that complicates things a bit, but it would be unique.

You could even make a few different shades of phase plugs and also sell them as speaker 'spikes' in conjunction with a plastic (or even better--cast alum) outrigger type of mount, similar to the ones you had on buyout a few years back:

I love that setup and wish I had bought more of them before they went away. These brass spikes are truly beautiful to behold, and they look to be the same shape as most phase plugs I see.
