  • OT: I love veneering!

Yesterday I laid up some nice heavily figured Mappa Burl on a pair of .5cu/ft cabs. Everything went on without a hitch. Today I filled some voids with epoxy and sanded it to 300grit ... then the best part, the first time you wipe a new veneer with oil. I just love that rush when you see the figure pop and all the colors deepen. I might even like this part more than the listening to music Sorry no pics but the sun is behind the trees here, I'll take some in the morning.

Nothing better then rubbing a nice chunk of wood, eh?

    ;)

It is pretty cool though to see how much more depth you see to the natural figuring of wood when finished well. Looking forward to the pics.

I know exactly what you mean. When I started putting oil on my Statement Monitors (maple/cherry) I realized I was almost laughing, and saying "wow!" over and over again, even though I was alone in the garage. It's a giddy feeling - that "home stretch" part of a long project that's about to pay off.

Though I've only done it twice... totally agreed. Things start getting twitchy at that point. With quilted maple, the grain was the show stopper... With dad's tritrix and cherry... the color.. oh my. Like the last chapter in a good book (if I actually ever read anything).

            I hear you.
I am just getting to the end game with a set of LouC's C-Killas. Not sure I like how they will come together color-wise, but I like how the boxes and baffles are turning out, individually. Boxes are quarter-sawn red oak and the baffles are curly maple and mottled cherry. They need several more coats of poly, but I am starting to see how they will look at the end.

Andy, those are some sweeeeet lookin' baffles! I love the contrast in color and texture. You should be making custom guitar bodies!

Thanks Tom, I am trying to get better at "simple" builds before trying anything complex. I would like to try my hand at "real" woodworking in the future. Something like furniture, though I really like getting to build stuff and then getting to hear them make music, combining two therapies at the same time. ;)

Well, I have used contact cement (solvent-based) with both NBL and paper-backed with good results, but pretty nasty process. I have used PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) paper-backed with good success and its much less dangerous.
NBL will be more forgiving of your base preparations and will go over .75" radius corners (and larger). Paper-backed will go around tighter corners and easier, but less tolerant of blemishes underneath.
I have not tried the wood glue and iron method, but it looks like a nice way to go.

I have used the titebond wood glue/iron method as well as contact cement.
The glue/iron method is much more forgiving .

No sun today so no pics ... gotta have nice lighting to show off the figure :D

Had a small blowout too, just a 1/4" piece off a corner, but have that clamped up fixing it now ... another excuse not to take pics. And I thought I could get away with no grain filler on this veneer, but I think it's going to need some afterall. It's still a bit rough after 300grit sanding.
