  • new project underway

I thought I would post a couple pictures of the latest project. I am just getting going on these so no to much to share yet. The boxes are starting to come together but the going is slow since I have to work outside in the Iowa winter.

The construction method is a constrained layer the 3 layers so far are 1/8" cork glued to 1/2' OSB with an outer layer of 1/4" HDF. The final layer will be 1" oak on the top and bottom stained very dark brown. The sides and back will be 5/16" oak bead board also stained dark brown. The first three layers are all glued together with standard wood glue. The oak will be attached with silicon.

The attached picture shows the baffle (not yet cut) anyone care to guess what kind of wood? 2 pcs (14" x 54" one inch thick) cost just over $100.00.
The small bit is a piece of unfinished oak for reference.

I will talk about the drivers when it gets time to mount them. (meaning I am still undecided on the tweeter)

Nice find and price on the Purpleheart Doug, I'll be looking forward to hearing them and visiting Iowa again.

No it's purple heart. I believe it was just over 8 bucks a board foot.

Purple heart is some really hard stuff! Blast from the past, thesr were was parts of my very first projects as a DIYer (late fall 2005), with stained birch veneer and purple heart baffles! Dr. K MTM's with my own take on a pair of matching subs as stands.

So what is it going to be, a 3way floor stander?

That's the plan TMWW. The woofers (RS-180) will be ported in their own box.

The mid (Fountek 146) is going to be run open back on the baffle with a short (6" or so) tunnel.

I am still undecided on the tweeter. I was going to use the silky-T but the two I have on hand have different impedance profiles. Never a good sign. I could use the dayton planar since they are on the shelf but I am a little worried about the distortion profile. Wolf is not a fan of them and I trust his ears. I also have some old audax tweets on hand but they are NLA if I ever need a replacement.

I've still got time. I figure it will be a few weeks (at least) until I am done with the boxes

I've used the PT2-A aka YAG-20, and those are fine units, and I liked them. If this is the B or C Dayton, I have not even heard it myself. I will say the FR plot looks problematic on the B/C versions, and the A was easier to use. I don't know if it was really me that said that.

If it were me, Doug, I'd use the HiVi RT1.3 with them...:D

It's the C unit. I must be getting old to miss-remember something like that. I will most likely toss the tweets on a simple baffle with a basic cross-over and see how they sound. If the sounds aren't ugly then I will go with them.

Please use a cap! I wouldn't want you to fry them on first listen.

I will. I was going to just model up something quick with a cap and a coil in PCD at about 3K and give a listen. Maybe even this weekend.

It was based upon Roy Allison's studies. This cabinet shape puts the woofer closer to two boundary wall surfaces, the floor and back wall. Concepually, this can help to fill out the dips in the low end response and generally make the natural room boundary reinforced roll off less severe. He had a 3way back in the 80's that had the woofer mounted this way.

A local pub has some EV subwoofers that are in this type of configuration. Very nice sound in this pub, at least when someone with ears is running the mixer. ;)

If you're going to use a ribbon or a planar, please, please use a Fountek ribbon.
