  • Average build time?

Just curious how fast most speaker DIY projects come together once parts and plan are in hand. I wasted a perfectly good day today and will be SuperBowl engaged tomoz, so there goes another one...

Well- I've been working on the 'MAX' since Jan 23rd of last year in the initial sims. I bought the drivers in July. Construction was completed in October, and I'm still voicing a bit. I think I'm adding yet another 0.5 ohm tonight to the series resistor than I already have, for a total of +2.5 ohms over the original no ohms. So- Just over a year for total time, and 3-4 months for the tweaking and finishing.

Probably 100 - 200 hours for a large full range.

        Re: Average build time?

I don't design or voice (yet), so I just build the tested projects posted by the talented designers found here and elsewhere on the web. Since my part of the job - just building and finishing - is so straightforward, it goes much faster.

Most of my builds have been completed within 3 months with dedicated part-time work. I usually work in warmer weather when I can route outdoors, paint baffles, etc.

I do have one build that has been mostly complete for 1-1/2 years just awaiting veneer, so I haven't heard that one yet. I'll get around to it when time and weather allow.

On A simple Small 2-way like the Horizons, I started the Brainstorming in July, I just finished teh tweaking and am building the x-overs within the week, so for a simple design just over 7mos.

            Re: Average build time?

I've never designed my own, but in building something already designed, I can get the build done in a full day (thanks to a brad nailer).

The finish? That's another story. :D
            Builds - C-Killa - Speedsters - LithMTM - Talking Sticks - Pocket Rockets - Khanspires - Dayton RS Center - RS225/28A - Kairos - Adelphos - SEOS TD12X - Dayton 8 - Needles - 871S - eD6c - Overnight Sensations - Tritrix (ported) - Lineup F4 - Stentorians - The Cheapies - Tub Thumpers - Barbells - Tuba HT - Numerous subwoofers - probably missing a few...... :p

Spent a good 100 hours on a set of Statements monitors, with full veneer and seal, etc.

Spent 5 hours on knocking together a set of sealed plywood Tritrix for garage use.

So I think the answer is "how long you you want it to take?"

Ok. I don't feel so guilty then. I had expected to hear, "Yeah, I designed and slapped this 4-way together over the weekend then took it to and won First Prize Indiyana 20??."

                    Re: Average build time?

When I build cabinets I don't use screws or nails, just glue and clamps. So considering time for work and family I basically only glue up a few joints a day. So it takes me forever to build things. I've found that if I hurry myself tho, I make mistakes and end up with unsatisfactory results. It doesn't pay to hurry. But if you don't it can take days, weeks, even months to get some cabinets built up.

HEH HEH EHEH EHHEH HEHEH.... Tis the nature of the beast, innit? Man, I remember the first time I design a pair of speaker I went "public" with... They were amazing, did so much so well... Then I took them out of my room, they were awful. I was embarassed as I debuted them at a local HIFI store in front of 20 of my best audiophile buddies. I still feel a little embarassed :o

Finally, something where I get things done faster than most ... a welcome change :D

Usually once I start on a project I go from paper sketches to first voicing in 4-6 weeks. And I try to stay focused on the voicing until I'm happy with it, not let it sit for days or weeks ... because you become unfamiliar with subtle differences and have to start over essentially.

But, I work from home so I guess it doesn't count :p

                              Re: Average build time?

I started 6 weeks before Iowa. If I had had time to paint them, add another 3. They're STILL sitting in my office in raw MDF. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up. I'm also considering getting my brother-in-law to shoot them with some automotive paint the next time he's in his dad's booth.

But that's all in real-world-job-and-kids-and-house-and-stuff time. If I had done things a little differently, I could have probably knocked them out in 3 weeks.

My other speakers? Those have been a work in progress for almost 2 years, but they'll be done before InDIYana!
