  • New Project changes and suggestions...

Well after deciding what my next and final build will be (final? yea right...) I had narrowed it down to 2 current designs with some modifications. Either some sort of Avalon type cabinet or a Sonus Faber type design... In doing my research I came across a guy in Madrid who did a beautiful Sonus project. The nice thing about having a set of plans, is I can start the build way before I have the drivers. The down side is, I need to verify all his measurements for those drivers... Since for the most part, I like his design, I am going to move forward with it.

I am verifying the data before I build and deciding if I want to change any of the drivers, but here are some of my changes and I am open to any suggestions that you all have they may give me a better performing final product...

    1) I am going to veneer the cabinets.
    2) I am going to move the tweeter farther down on top of the midrange
3)I am going to move the woofers closer together
    4) I probably going to put in a 7" mid driver like the Amati's I think the 18W/8545 will match the two 21W/8555-01's nicely in the sealed .4 cu. ft mid enclosure (or so I hope, bass box pro has fooled me before...) I may change the mid enclosure to a vented if I need to as to accommodate a different driver.
    5) I am going to make the baffle a tad thicker so I can go a little steeper on the top for time alignment purposes.

The biggest problem I have is the all scanspeak drivers are going to run me I excess of $1800. I still need to do a crossover, so there is probably another $500 or more... I was thinking of using Usher 8955a's but Bass box is telling me I need 3.6 cubic feet and I have 2.62 in the current configuration. I can come up with an additional .38 by opening up into the dead space at the bottom of the cabinet for the crossover. The Eton 8 inch drivers would work nice too, but their xmax is way too low... Although I don't really crank up the music anymore, but I like that ability if I need it...

Hey Mark, value and budget are two major concerns here ... so why not do a Sonus type construction with project updates along the way that other people can follow, but use more reasonably priced drivers. How about:

    SB29 for the tweet
    SB15 for the mid
And maybe a pair of the DIY Cable Anarchy's for the woofers

That could cut the cost to 1/3, and keep every bit of the performance. If you're thinking of time alignment, checkout Troels' latest site update.

The anarchy woofers are a good idea, but I wanted to stick with 8's for the woofers. However with that excursion capability, It may work well.

I will be doing a project thread once I get into the project...

I say rock the 8955a. Cant you just extend your cabinet length slightly to accomodate the needed additional airspace?

True, But at about 45 inches wall, they are quite large...Its probably another 8 inches to give me the .6 additional cubic feet I need. Unless, bassbox pro is wrong with the 3.6 cubic feet... I can stuff the hell out of it so but me some space as well...

I like the captain's recommendation - Usher 8955, SB29 and a good 5" to 6" mid. This last weekend I got together one side of SB29 w/ SS18W4531G02 (mad specials) and I am really liking it. Seems that you will need something fairly efficient to go with 2x 8955. I'd spend the money on the mid.

One person who you might find quite approachable is Troels Gravesen about driver recommendation. He has personally used so many and I value opinion from actual implementation and listening. I contacted him a few years ago about something and he was quite open with his thoughts about drivers. What I remember off hand was that he did not like the SS revelator 15M but liked the SS revelator 15W.

            Anyhoo, my $.02

Check out cjd's sim for what a pair of Anarchy's will do ... he put 1.5ohm series in front for the model.

I know SB acoustics are the new "gotta use" drivers, but Scan Speak means better resale value. Audio snobs have heard of Scan-Speak, Seas, Eton, etc. They haven't heard of SB acoustics; and they certainly don't care that SB acoustics gets them "Scan Speak performance at a bargain price."
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

They look nice. The 46 liters would allow me to slip the box down a bit closer to the original Amati design... I wil give this some serious thought.

Dude, I agree... I can do Etons for about half the price as scan speaks, but I am afraid of how limited my output will be with an xmax of 3mm... I would love to use all revelator scanspeaks, but that will raise my costs...

I would at least stick with the Revelator mids. Its the most important driver. Perhaps to save duckets, you could pair it up with something like the XT25 ?

If you want to save a little coin, buy a non ring radiator version of that tweeter. IMO, RR's are over rated anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions... I agree with spend the bucks on the mid... I think I can get away with the usher woofers if I fill the box heavy... Bass Box gives me 2.93 cu ft with heavy fill... get a good tweeter for under $100 (there are many) and maybe do the revalator midrange...I need to see what will work in that .4 cu ft sealed mid box...although it may look out of place against the usher woofers... (yes, I did say look). I can probably drop the driver costs down to $1000...

+100,000,000. Furthermore I am not convinced that SB really competes with Scan yet. Even the "classic" Scan stuff. The SB measures well, and is a good value, an d from what I have herd of them they certainly are a heavy hitter. Yet the best way I can explain it is they are like the most powerful telescope on earth, and the scans are like the Hubble. The scans just seem to "see" farther. ESPECIALLY the revelators.

Personally, the bass looks a bit too overextended (Q=< .6). So you get to the mid 20's, at great SPL's, but will they do it with the grace of a 7" Scan? Likely not. It looks like it may be sacrificing control for extention... and Audiophiles (music lovers, any expirenced ear regardless of technical knowledge) will pick that up very quickly as sounding "slow" or even worse "tubby".

Just something to think about. It is extremely hard to compete at the levels you are talking with "value" drivers. Scans, Seas Excel+, Fostex, Eton... They all do something I have yet to hear in the entry-high-end stuff. What's worse? It's 100% subjective... If you build with scans, and tell them its goldwoods, by default it will sound bad!!!! Not worth the risk to save a few bucks. Buy once, cry once.

Most audio snobs have no idea what a Scan Speak is, or any other driver manufacturers. I've built a few systems for RMAF rooms and worked the crowd, and can say that 98% of the people had no clue what they were looking at.
