  • Driving me nuts!!....

Giving in to being dumb again. I've seen more systems than I can count with tall PVC looking pipes to either side of what is obviously speakers yet the PVC deal goes unidentified.

I'd assumed they were some type of room treatment deal I didn't understand the workings of but now wondering if they have some type of driver installed somewhere in the line to enhance either lows or highs.

What's the scoop on these and why have I seen 50 pictures of them with no explanation as to the workings? Usually gangs of 2 or 3 to each side of mains. These aren't sonotubes so can't believe they are subs.

Re: Arrrr! It's driving me nuts!!....

So a pirate walks into a bar with a ship's steering wheel attached to his belt buckle. The bartender looks at the pirate and says "Hey mister, I can't help but notice that you've got a ship's steering wheel stuck to the front of your pants" to which the pirate looks at him and replies. "Arrrrr, it's drivin me nuts!"

Ok, I had to get that out, your title just put it into my brain. Anyways could you post some pictures of what you're talking about or links to pictures. I'm having a hard time fully understanding what you're talking about.

If you mean speakers in tubes, either they're just using them as round enclosures or as a transmission line google "transmission line" "quarter wave" or "martin j king" to see what that is all about.

If you mean a speaker box with a pvc tube coming out of it then maybe its just a port that didn't fit inside the box so the designer decided to extend it outside the box. Some of us crazies do that see Collo's subwooferbuilder.net

Otherwise I have no idea what you're talking about. And if you're just asking about sized and types of tube, PVC comes in quite a few sizes, you just have to know where to look, otherwise it probably is sonotube or some other concrete form tube.

Those are low and high frequency sound absorbers and diffusers.

See: http://www.realtraps.com/products.htm or many other sites for room mode attenuation.

          Short drive....

Yeah- if they aren't large enough to be subwoofers at at least 12" diameter, then the multi-tubular objects are most likely diffusers as others have stated.
