  • **CAUTION** Avoid "Smart Post" option...

... unless you like extra headaches in your life. It seems that instead of it being a USPS solo act, FedEx picks up the package from the origin, gets it to the destination city where they hand it off to the USPS for delivery. Here is the tracking info from FedEx.

    Package Activity:
03/02/2010 ~ 17:55:00 Shipment information sent to FedEx
03/03/2010 ~ 01:54:59 Arrived at FedEx location GROVE CITY OH
03/03/2010 ~ 07:27:00 Departed FedEx location GROVE CITY OH
03/04/2010 ~ 00:00:00 Shipment information sent to USPS LAS CRUCES NM
03/04/2010 ~ 15:11:46 Arrived at FedEx location DALLAS TX
03/04/2010 ~ 17:21:02 Departed FedEx location DALLAS TX
03/05/2010 ~ 17:05:00 At USPS facility LAS CRUCES NM
03/09/2010 ~ 01:42:00 At USPS facility LAS CRUCES NM
    03/09/2010 ~ 10:26:00 Delivered LAS CRUCES NM

As you can see, my order has been here in town since 5:05 Friday night. It is now 9:00 Tuesday night. But it gets better! It clearly states I have my package! Wrong! When I call FedEx cust. svc. to let them know I was here all day and received nada, the guy tells me their tracking for delivery is only accurate to when they hand off to the USPS.

Very slick! Get someone else involved and then who is there to point a finger at when there's a fly in the ointment? I confess to being a bit miffed and disappointed that this new shipping option wasn't entirely a USPS deal as I had thought when I ordered.

Hope I can report a better outcome tomorrow...

    Oh, MY!

Won't be doing that anytime soon! What was supposed to be the benefit? Lower cost?

Yeah, it was like, $2.50 cheaper. On a $40.00 order, that seemed like a more realistic price. Sure wish it was all USPS; I've never had an ordeal with them...

I may be Canadian, but every time I order from the states I try to keep it USPS. I find that USPS (and Canada Post) are usually more reliable than the others...and little to no customs fees for some reason.

It seems this "Smart Post" thing negates the whole purpose of the tracking. They hand the parcel off to someone else who is not the recipient and have washed their hands of the delivery. The only way to make that any bit useful is for USPS to give you tracking information when they receive the package.

Except, when I get something delivered by USPS, their tracking is almost non-existent. All I ever see is that USPS has received electronic notification from the vendor, and the tracking info stays like that until it shows up at my house.

But, back to Smart Post, two different shipping organizations = twice the opportunity to screw up. Okay, maybe I'm underestimating, maybe it is more like 4X the opportunity.

matt when you get the electronic notification. how did you hand it off to the post office.

did you go to the window?

use a automatic post office machine ? if so during hours or after hours?

or did you buy the label online?

I am doing my own personal research on your exact complaint.

I have had 3000 dollars in problems (6 items total of 3300) over your complaint. In my case it seems to be I can not put any insured items in the overnight auto box at my local post office. 5 of the missing items were placed in the auto box. 1 was at the window. The window item appeared 2 weeks late. 4 of the 5 items lost in the auto box were found. 1 stayed lost.

So info from other people with the same complaint would be helpful. TIA phil

I was only referring to items I've bought. But I am getting ready to sell some stuff, maybe I should think about using something other than USPS?

I got a package by "Smart Post" last week and it also sat in the Post Office a couple of days before I got it.
The best thing about the USPS is that their letter/package volume is so large that they are not able to lose or destroy every piece. I used to sell software from my home years ago and needless to say I am not a fan of the USPS.

I understand your frustration. But, I'm a little sympathetic with PE on this one. They offer a lot of different shipping option with different speeds and costs. Maybe they should be more clear what to expect from the SmartPost.

I hope my comment wasn't seen as disatisfaction with PE. (USPS is a different story unrelated to PE.) PE has treated me great. Shipping is expensive and they offer the Smart Post option to save us money not themselves.

Thanks for reply I have purchased 10 items with your above setup 7 showed up. 3 vanished. That is from my buyers viewpoint

I am trying to get seller info on this. because I placed about 100 packages in my post offices auto mail box for shipping and this problem is showing up more and more 6 or so out of the last 40 packages.

I am thinking the automated post office machine is a very tempting target for a postal employee. Open a box with 80 packages the employee may not scan one or two. who's to know what happened. This last half year I have had a lot of hassles with post office, ebay ,online , even here on pe look like a scam happened to me and a few others via the classified page.
