OT- How're the NE builders doing? Rain/flooding...

With all the flooding and such up there, I'm a bit curious if mzisserson, and others are doing okay. It looks pretty bad up there!

I'm at ground zero here in Warwick, RI...

It's bad... fortunately I'm on high ground, so no immediate damage to the house.

I'm staying home from work again today, since my normally 20 minute commute is likely to take hours... and I have a 9-month-pregnant wife who is ready to go at any minute :eek:

I've got to take two detours to get to work, it only adds 10-15 minutes though. The nearby Neponset River is supposed to crest today.

Luckily my back yard has a strong downhill slope and my recent full entrance built over the below-grade basement entry fixed the only other remaining issue. I'd had a flooded basement the first month after buying the house 9 years ago due to poor grading of the brick patio that the previous owner added. The guy didn't slope it much and it also settled. Did a nice job of channeling the rain from the driveway down the walkway right to the basement entry. Just 1 inch elevation change made all the difference.

I work in East Hartford in an old mill. The view out my window is a waterfall that used to power the mill a long time ago. We had about 9" of rain in 2 days. The flow over the falls is amazing. Pretty powerful. I haven't seen it like this in years. At least there was no snow melt to go along with it.

In southern CT where I work, doesn't seem too bad. Just big puddles here and there. My wife said that the access road that rings the Danbury mall turned into moat. We do see houses that have hoses expelling water into their yards, so no doubt there are many flooded basements.

Our house sits on a big pile of landfill. Our lawn does not like it, but the advantage is that it very dry and we will not be flooded by acts of nature (we have been flooded by man-made disasters like water tank breaking).

My house sits high on a hill so no yard flooding etc... Unfortunely I think there isn't much in the way of soil between my foundation and bedrock so with all the rain I had about 5 inches of water in my basement. No serious losses though most of the items we were worried about getting wet were off of the floor.

I've had a sump pump running on and off for two days while waiting for the water table to drop. Water stopped flowing in this morning temporairly so I'm taking tomorrow off to shop vac and perhaps work on some speakers once the less enjoyable tasks are over with.


I was surprised to see how high the blackstone river was on Tuesday night on my way home. It's usally an 8' wide stream that was completely flooding a bike trail/park to the point it was ~100' wide.

Good luck to those in Rhode Island!!! Cranston and Warwick sure look to have taken a beating from this.

Reporting in from South Shore MA (Rockland). Water was coming into my basement like there was a hose on. Sump pump managed like a champ. Not too much got wet... I got most stuff up off the concrete.

The basement flooding normally starts after 2.5 days of rain, but because the ground was still saturated from the last storm, the flooding started immediately.
