  • My recent project - small MTM, new gallery...

I thought I'd throw together some speakers to bring to INDIYana, I was too busy with school + new baby girl, didn't get then started until the night before DOH!

Stayed up late, got a pair done sans crossovers - here's the gallery: Crito's Tiny MTMs

    They're 6.5" wide x 15" tall.

I slapped a random coil on the woofer, ~ 4.3 uF cap + 8 Ohm shunt resistor on the tweeter and figured I'd just see what that does for the fun of it:

If I get my math homework done, and get to Rat Shack (Radio Shack) to pickup some audio cable adapters, I'll measure impedance and I can get to starting the crossover modeling...

Are those the 16 ohm midbasses?

The crossover should be real easy on these, once I get the impedance measurements and some good quality FR measurements done The woofer extends high and the roll-off is real smooth. First order electrical LP on the woofer, a notch on the tweeter at FS, and either first or second order electrical HP on the tweeter at ~3.5 - 4 Khz will give me a very smooth response, from what I've seen so far. Oh, I'll try to get BSC taken care of with the one LP inductor + a resistor, we'll see how that works out...

      Yep.

They're listed mistakenly listed as 5-1/4" on the P.E. website - they're the same size as the Vifa PL11 which are called "4.5". I was surprised when I received them and they weren't 5-1/4"! They are nice little woofers and they are a good deal, so instead of returning them I just bought a couple more and made MTMs instead of my original 2-way plan.

That FR is desirable in some circles - they call it a BBC dip
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Are you about to pull off one of the smallest 4-4.5 MTM's ever?
Did you use a table or free hand those baffles? The recesses and round over are very clean for normal play wood.
          Good looking so far.

Thanks - the baffle is about as small as it can be and still have 3/4" roundovers. I did the roundovers on my DIY router table.

It's not "normal" plywood - it's Baltic birch, not the type you find at Lowes or Home Depot either, the 13? layer cabinet grade stuff that comes in square sheets.

I didn't make it to Radio Shack to pickup the adapters I needed, maybe tomorrow. The integrated USB soundcard in the Berhinger 1204USB mixer I got seems to work fine with both ARTA and HolmImpulse, haven't tried it with any other programs yet. I'm so happy I finally have a calibrated mic, mic preamp, and all that setup... Since I moved away from the speaker factory in Brooklyn I haven't really had a complete measurement setup going her in Ohio. I was getting by with some DIY mics w/o preamp and not calibrated...

Heh - you know that's not a modeled/"designed" crossover from what I said in the first post, right? :P Just wanted to play with my new measurement setup a little so I threw some components on - I did kind of try to guess what might work, so not entirely random I suppose...

You know, I find your mentioning of *****'s name and your statement that PE allegedly ignored you is out of place and unfair. If you had a gripe with ***** and/or PE, you should have handled it privately, not on this forum IMO. Your comments are similar to the same bad judgement and poor social skills what's his name displayed a week or so ago on a Saturday when he couldn't get his WT3 to work and repeatedly criticized PE and their product without them being able to respond until Monday when PE was open for normal business hours.

They're the same size as the Vifa PL11 which are called "4.5". P.E. customer service is usually top notch, I didn't ask to return them for a refund or anything, but I'm still surprised they just ignored me.

Wow, talk about "the pot calling the kettle black" - sheesh. "Allegedly" offends me. I am extremely honest, and fair. I have been helpful to dozens of people, directly refered thousands of dollars of business to P.E., linked to/recommended P.E. products probably hundreds of times. Frankly, I was a little disapointed, and I think not mentioning it would have been the less reasonable reaction.

This happened months ago. My post did not in any way go beyond the boundries of polite, honest, and considerately restrained. I can't say the same for your post.

Fact is, the ad is wrong and needs to be changed. Look at the ill-will it is causing.

They do look nice! Why don't you delete this post and re-post in the Projects section and everybody gets a do-over.

Well, there's a lot left to do, once I've got a crossover completed I'll post a project

I think I went far enough on my end, I gave them an opportunity to step up to the excellent level of customer service they are famous for, and they dropped the ball (in more than one way) - not a big deal, just enough to warrant a mention. I'd certainly still rate Parts Express five stars - nobody's perfect after all.

Twice I started to reply and twice I deleted but I've reconsidered. The fact that this all occurred months ago reinforces my view of your post as only necessary to satisfy your apparent need to criticize, and not in a polite or fair way but with sarcasm by the "tone" of your words. Maybe I'm reading between the lines unnecessarily or incorrectly, but that's how it came across to me. That said, I'll not make any more comments.

I talked to them because I was disapointed. The reaction I got was simply to be ignored. This disapointed me further. I'm not name calling, whining, or distorting any facts. In today's society are we no longer allowed to be critical or complain in a courteous and reasonable manner?

How exactly am I being unfair or impolite? Despite my opinion being that my post was fair, I removed names in order to be extraordinarily sensitive.

Let me resort to analogy: pretty much anyone will complain at a restaurant if they get something terrible. This is not at all the situation we have here - I never gave any indication to the contrary. When someone is mildly disappointed a wise restaurant owner will be thankful for every complaint they get from such a customer, for those are far more valuable than the reaction of the average customer which is: simply not to return and not to recommend the restaurant to their friends.

I continue to return to parts express and recommend them. I suppose it is some flaw in my character that I continue to be bothered about being ignored about their misrepresentation of this product on their web page, and their failure to attempt to make amends, or correct the web page. I should have tried again to contact another person there to get the web page corrected, but I'm not really wanting to subject myself to further disappointment.

Here's the page as of today...

Very nice little woofer, fantastic extension and relatively smooth rolloff at the top.
