  • 8" Usher 8955A Dayton RS28F build kick off.

Kicked off the 8" Usher build today. Should have the cabs ready for paint tomorrow. I'm gonna try a highly textured stone finish in off white. I have a gallon of texturing paint for the base and six cans of stone finish for the top coat and color. This will be my first white colored project. I have been impressed by most of the other white builds i have seen. Should be fun!

Wolf did the brunt of the X over design (thanks again). I had Madi build the boards with some alternative parts when they had a deal. I got the boards built and shipped for less then I could order parts for.

I'm gonna go kind of crazy on baffle thickness, bracing and cab dampening on this one. I adjusted volume and port size to accommodate. I got a roll of ultra carpet padding, 1/2 X 2 foam rubber adhesive backed weather stripping, fiber wool, fiberglass insulation and caulking to really dampen and seal things up. These bad boys are gonna need to be moved on a dolly by the time I'm done! Not to mention the weight of them big 8" ushers.

I'll keep the pics coming as things progress. Later

i bet they will sound great. consider a primer/sealer before the paint. with now color added, menards has one that is white. should work well.

I'll put some pics up in the morning. Put in a late shift working on them tonight. Things went well except for one bad measurement on the a tweeter cutout. Nothing catastrophic. I got a good feeling on these ones I think they will have a huge sound. Time for a night cap!;)

Got the lining, wool, and bracing in. The cut outs are done with one mess up on the tweeter cut out.:o All joints and brad nail holes have been mudded and sanded twice. Waiting for vents prom PE, Should be here Tuesday? I'm gonna keep the bottoms removable and keep the X-over external till final voicing is complete.

                I take it you'll free-hand the rebates?

I used to do it that way.... Not hard if you take your time.

The finish thats going on these is so textured thats the rebates are not needed. Each cab is getting primer, base paint and a gallon of heavy textured ceiling paint rolled on and matte clear coat spray finish. On the test panel I did the overall thickness of these paints was just about the same as the thickness of the speaker basket flange. So rebating them would actually put them sub or recessed into the finished elevation of the baffle surface.

The pencil marks around the cutouts are where I will put painters edge tape when painting the cabs. When removed the MDF will be exposed. And the drivers can be secured down to have a finished surface elevation very close to the heavy texture cab finish.

I'm skipping the stone finish spray paint. It is just a waste with the textured paint. The textured paint when applied with a 1" Knapp roller has so much texture that the stone finish aerosol can stuff would not even be noticed. I will save that stuff for another project. Maybe some surrounds to accompany these big towers?

I guess the Usher frame is thinner than I thought.

Great looking x-o's! Mind if I ask what their cost was?
