  • bookshelf speakers against wall

Can anyone suggest any small sealed or front ported speaker designs that I can build ?

I'd like to replace the small sets of Sony bookshelf speakers for both my computer and the wifes' Sony Kitchen stereo as they are adequate but that's about it .
Unfortunately both sets of speakers are close together and right against a wall in both cases.
Something a bit bigger than the Minimus 7 size and fairly efficient . I actually tried my set of Minimus 7's after upgrading the crossover , but the amps I'm using in both areas are low powered and the Minimus 7 seems like it's in a too small box to start with.
Any suggestions are appreciated . I just bought a Milwaukee plunge and fixed router set and a couple of bits.... so this would be a good way to learn how to use for DIY speakers

I'm sure I've done a few that fit that bill.

I just finished these a few weeks ago. They are meant to sit up against a wall. I was very pleased with the sound.

Thanks for the tip Paul , I think the .25 cu. ft. size is too deep for the small area I have . I was looking at the Overnight Sensations , but it's rear port rules that out unfortunately . I'll probably have to have something no deeper than seven inches and no taller than 10 inches max with width no more than 7 inches to fit on the shelf and also on the kitchen counter . Our house is pretty small so I have to think European some times with regard to the size of things in the smaller rooms .
This will probably limit me to a 4 inch or 5 inch woofer and maybe even a single full range driver .

Louc has some very small speakers using Tangband 4 inch drivers. Wolf has some very small ones also.

I've got a small pair of 3-ways I just finished roughing out the boxes and speaker placement. They measure 7"W, 5 3/4"D, and 10 3/4" H. I couldn't find a small 3-way for comp. monitors. I need to work out a better x-over from the pre-made I'm now using, but so far the sound isn't too bad. 4" bass (40W), 3.5" mid (25W) and 3/8" mylar tweet (15W).

The tops and bottoms still need to be glued (evidenced by the franken-bolts at each end!) And I'm considering cutting 3/4" off the front and making the baffles the size of the outer edges of the box. The blue tape you see is covering for some routering tear-outs at the edges.

They could be a bit smaller using 1/2" MDF instead of the 3/4" ply. Once I've gotten them tweaked, they'll get a mahogany skin and matt finish.

The Piccolatas are my best mini design, but may not be scalable to your space.

Either of these should work well with a bit of modification:

You might look over the Nugget 2 Move the ports to the front flanking the tweeter or do a slot port out the front. Much better speaker than you would expect.

Or the Amethyst. That's already front ported. The box could be adjusted a bit (taller, shallower) to fit.

If either interests you, email me and I'll see what I can do to help.

I think these would be about the right size.

overnight sensations don't have to be rear port. i'm finishing up a pair of them that i did as front ported. was able to put the port in a location kinda similar to that of lou's amethyst, or wolf's sophomore, without having to make any adjustments to paul's baffle size.

Yeah. A few people have front ported them. Results back were favorable. ;)

                    Re: bookshelf speakers against wall

Thanks for a lot of excellent suggestions . Looks like I'll be going with the Amethysts for the design and space although all looked like good candidates .
Are there any similar designs with the Dayton RS 100 4 inch driver ?
Seems like everyone likes using the Hi Vi B4N in this size .
Does the Dayton need a larger volume ?

It probably has more to do with that Dayton's low sensitivity.

                        Actually, based on cone area;

                        The RS100 is a 3" driver.
                        The RS125 is a 4".
                        The RS150 is a 5-1/4".

I know you will be pleased with Lou's Amethyst design. They have been in my wife's kitchen for over a year now and get lots of play time. I still am surprised at how good they sound.
