So far they are still bare MDF, but here is a pic none the less. The Pico Neo is the ones using the RS28 boxes as stands. The boxes are 3/4" MDF at 6/9/10.5" w/d/h which yields a 5 liter (.175 ft2) internal volume. The port is 1" PVC 4.5" tuning the box to 48Hz and giving an F3 of 41Hz. Absolutely fantastic for near-field without a sub . . . I'm very happy with these as computer speakers . . . particularly when you want good bass without the risk of waking up the wife and kids . . . something I find myself needing more often than not.

After break in, I was noticing a bit (read very slight) of a dip between 80Hz and 55 Hz so I went in search of TS specs measured after break in (I had previously used the PE spec sheet) and came across the Murphy Corner Line Array project where they have tested this driver extensively. After loading up these specs I now see a model which almost exactly follows what I was hearing (which I am also attaching along with the pic). With the new paramaters, I am playing around with modeling in a smaller box and higher turning giving me some sudo BSC and a roll off which should blend well with room gain, con being that they loose about 10Hz of their current bottom end. Since making this change makes these no longer Chris's Pico Neo I don't want to go into any further detail here and will start my own thread once boxes are built and I can do some in room testing.

The ones in front are Wolf's PC alignment . . . my first stab at this full range driver. These are in a 1 liter box with the driver in series with a 500uF CAP to help with "small box peak" and extending the low end a bit. By my standards, these require a sub. They play fairly level down to around 70Hz where they fall off very fast. Using the "ear" test, id but F6 at about 65Hz with nothing audible below 60Hz. An excellent Bose Killer if used on wall (to compensate the lack of BSC) with a sub crossed at 80Hz.

For those who notice every detail in pictures, the XOs on the desk are for a pair of the Microbe RS which uses the RS125S-8 and RS28A-4 (Hence the boxes used as stands). I really love small speakers, can you tell?

Thanks for the pics and info on these two micro speakers. Gives me a good visual of how large they are in comparison. I might even build a quick set of these for my surrounds.

I posted a question on one of the XO pics on your gallery, but I ended up finding the answer to it. I'm getting ready to order the parts for these, but noticed item #015-4 (the 4 ohm 5w resistor for the HP) is out of stock till 3/28. Would there be any problem with using this #004-4 in its place?
        No problem. 016-4 is cheaper.

I thought Wolf used the Aura NS3, no?

Correct, however Wolf has stated (and it's been done by someone else) that the ND90-8 is close enough to be a drop in replacement for the 8 ohm Aura NS3. I modeled it (again after the fact) using the MCLA TS paramaters and I get a Qts of 1.1 (which is what your aiming for in this alignment) at .5 liters rather than 1 liter. This may be the reason why I am not getting "as good" as results on the low end smoothness and extension as is reported from using the NS3 in 1 liter. If I ever get around to putting together a Bose like sat sub setup for anyone, I may try a .5 liter box and see if it is any better. You are supposed to end up with a flat response down to 65Hz. Should play very nice crossed to a sub at 80Hz with all kinds of power handling.

Yeah- if the box gain with the higher Qtc before rolloff isn't enough, it won't sum up right. Since I was using spec T/S, I couldn't account for that difference.

Parts are ordered and should be here next week. I found a 26" X 97" piece of MDF in my stash. Now I have to figure out if I want to build the bookies or a skinny tower to rip off Totem Arro's.

Thanks Chris for the design. I am looking forward to this build.

Got two $50 checks in the mail today for participating in a market research survey... I'm going to order the parts for a set of Nano Neo's this weekend. I'm ready to try my first "real" speaker design other than a sub. This thread should be a huge help!

Does anyone have pics of their ntn crossovers? I'm wanting to compare it to what I've come up with. Just want to make sure I've got it right before I start soldering these things together.

                          Chris-

This is an good design with high value. I finally decided to build something that some of you experienced guys have designed, and I am nothing short of impressed. I have finished the nano neos, I am also working on a "mtm" center channel. I just spend a couple hours listening to the nano neo's (they have been broken in somewhat) and a-b testing with a sub, and at moderate listening levels it is hard to find music that you can really tell that the sub was turned on (with the sub at a correct level).

It is even fun to play these for people and get the "holy cow it is just those two little speakers playing?" and show them how much the woofer is moving....

I think my habit of buying buyout speakers and trying to cobble together a crossover is over- at least until I have some measuring equipment.

                          Thanks for the great design

isaeagle4031- when the wife gets home with the camera I will download the pics and put them up to see my ntn crossover

                            Chris,
I ordered (what I think is your latest version) 8 piece Xover with two coils.
Not being very experienced in Xover building, Do I have to orient the 2 coils a certain way when designing/putting together the Xover?

Do you have any pictures of your Xover with the 2 coils?

                            Thanks,

                              MLS,

I believe Chris is still using the original crossover in his set from what he told me. I ended up building the original crossover as well. Hopefully someone has some pics of the revised crossover assembled for you. If not I 'm sure someone can give you some pointers on how to arrange the coils on your crossover board. I'm waiting on some parts and a sander to arrive before I tackle finishing mine but they sound great!

It's best to keep the coils as far apart as possible, now, on a 3"x4" board (or whatnot - I kept mine small enough to fit through a woofer hole) that ain't too far. Besides that, one should be laid down in one corner, like a doughnut on a plate, and in the other corner, the one that seems most stable standing upright, should be "aimed" at the doughnut one, like it's a car tire that's going to run over the doughnut.
