I was most concerned about recessing the ND105-4 because of the pincushion shaped frame. Clearance on the back side should be no problem, I'll probably chamfer or round over the baffle edges anyway so I'll just setup the router table and do both in one setup. Any particular reason you used rabbet joints? Was that just to have more glue on the joint since you used particle board rather than MDF or Baltic Birch?

My dad helped me with my 1st design 10 yrs ago. First we cut them on the table saw, but once I saw the router method, I thought it was really slick. The router cuts are extremely smooth compared to the saw.

Today's PB is a LOT more homogeneous than 20 yrs ago. It's finer grained, doesn't have quite the dust issues as MDF, seems to give a screw something more to bite into, and won't break or dent if you bang it into a door frame.

I've built boxes from 0.1 to over 5.0 cu. ft., all 3/4" stuff using the 3/8" rabbet, using nothing more than Titebond and clamps (no biscuits, or even glue blocks). Also, I don't do any extra "sealing" of the joints with RTV caulk or anything. The rabbet gives you 50% more glue area over a bu** (as you mentioned), about 10% more than a mitre, and automatically squares your box up for you. ALL my speakers are painted white (well, almost all). If I was going for a smooth gloss finish, the PB would probably have to be sealed/sanded a LOT, but I use a flat white and LIKE any extra texture that the PB creates. In a darkened room, with off-white plastered walls, my white speakers all but disappear (except for the drivers).

Photos show my homemade router table (just a board flipped over an empty cardboard box), and how clean/close the joints fit. I cut all panels to size on the table saw, then run the rabbet around all 4 inside edges. The only thing is that you have to figure out what size your panels have to be to come up with the finished box size that you want. I usuallly make the front and back full height and width (so they have no seams facing the listener), the top and bottom are full width but 3/4" less than full depth, with the undersized side panels being inset all around.

Even though many bought the drivers on sale (quite a few still in their boxes I think), the only one who I'm aware of who built a version of my MtM was hyperlite, and I think he was very pleased with them. Most people who use this 4" woofer can't resist building the box out of 1/2" stock. DON'T do it. It's got the output of a 6-1/2" woofer and needs a decent box made from 3/4" material.

If I can ever get these woofers for $12 again, I'm going to build my MtM. The original Nano Neos is giving its first public performance in 3 days in Grinnell, Iowa. Prodigious amounts of bass for such a little guy.

I'm looking forward to hearing it Chris.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

                Chris,
I look forward to hearing your design this coming weekend because I purchased 4 of the ND105-4's when they were on sale for $12 each.

I've got the parts, hoping to put the saw to wood in the next couple weeks.

Going to be a mini (6.5" wide) floorstander, .8 cf.

                  Looking forward.

I have two sets of Nano Neo parts. I will probably build an MTM version as well as the TM. If I like them as well as I suspect, I will probably just buy another pair so that I can use the TM version as extra awesome PC speakers.

I do like cooper's idea of a mini floorstander. Eliminates crossover space problems, don't need to build new stands, can ballast a bit, etc, etc. Might even try to get more decorative.
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

The idea wasn't so "fully formed" as that, but yeah something like yours. ;)

Scale is hard to judge. Are those the ND-105's? If so, have you been holding out on us?

Yes, these are the 105-4 and nd20-6's with the crossover just like Chris outlined earlier in the thread. I substituted a Dayton poly for the tweeter series cap, otherwise the same.

I haven't exactly been holding out as I planned to post when I had them completely finished, but when the mtm talk started up again, I figured sharing my build details a little could be helpful to those wanting to do something similar.

First....A huge thanks to Chris Roemer for this Design and also to Mzisserson who first touted the nd105 in his New Horizon Design.
There are probably quite a few who follow this forum and glean expertise from so many here and never post. This is the first time I have posted on any forum! So thanks all.

I bought 8 of the 105's when they were on sale and have followed the thread from the beginning. The mtm as a mini floor-stander seemed like a natural to me.

                          Some details:
Outside cabinet dim 40" tall 6" wide 9 5/8" deep
Tweeter height from floor about 33"
I used 5/8" mdf(mostly because I had it), except the removable baffle is 3/4"
as well as the cabinet front below.
Like Chris, I would not advise 1/2" material.
I used One central shelf window type brace and two 3/4" dowels all ofset above and below.
Bottom 12" separate space houses crossover and ballast.. screw on panel for access
Net Volume is a little under .6 cu ft
Port is 2" id PVC X 7 5/8" total length including 3/4" r flare on exit end only
The port center is 17 1/4" from top of cab
WT3 shows cabinet tuning right at 38 hz..F3?
Fully lined with malwart mattress pad convoluted foam and several layers of cheap Dacron batting top and bottom of the cabinet and directly behind the drivers.
I made the baffle removable, and so far have the back piece just press fit in place. This allowed me to play with the batting until a response bump(wt3) that showed up at about 450hz smoothed out.
(I have all that's needed to do fr tests, just haven't got it set up yet.)

So how do they sound you're wondering?

I make no claims of having an ear anything close to golden.
Vietnam, Rock&Roll, hunting as a kid and power tools have all taken a toll.
I can still hear about 23hz to 13K pretty well....a little tinnitus..not too bad.

The last 30 years I have worked as a Luthier, building and repair, so I've
been paying attention to sound for a while. I love music and have varied tastes (Slip-Knot maybe not so much).

Prior to this project I've built six or seven proven dsign 2-ways and one mtm (the usual suspects) and 3 subs. They all sound great are incredible values and each have helped me learn and enjoy this hobby!

Currently I'm working on my first two way design...just starting to get a handle on RM 3. and PCD . Thanks Jeff!

                          OK finally,
The Bass response gets all the hype and deservedly. You just wont believe it till you hear them. But beyond that the dynamics are unreal, and I've not heard anything like these when it comes to that nebulous world of sound-stage.
They Sound Great, They Sound Huge, They Will Get Loud

I'll post a few more pics if anyone is interested.

Sorry this got a little long.

I didn't think it was too long. Gave the detail that folks want to know. Gave impressions and reinforcement of the sound quality. Otherwise you'd have used five or six posts to answer the questions for the same info.

I think that the folks here who have several designs are generally beyond the "I designed it, it the best evah" phase, but always nice to hear from folks who have built them . Especially nice when those folks have some "critical" connection to music.

And ....... welcome! Looking forward to your design.

Also, if it's not an issue, always nice to know generally where folks are. Surprising sometimes to find people with the same interest within sharing distance. All within individual comfort levels of course.
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

                                OK finally,
The Bass response gets all the hype and deservedly.

I like your roundovers, and your white PVC tube looks great w/the roundover too, much nicer than my cardboard tube.

                                Someday I'll hear a pair. ;-)
