Re: Pictures from Dayton 2010
On the music selection front:
I was briefly outside the room after the over $200 speakers category. Vivian of P-E was watching the door so no one came in while a specific speaker was undertest. She said that Carl Keys had an issue to tend to so he had to hand off the testing and leveling duties during that group of speakers. Apparantly, he didn't tell his substitute the specific music to use for the next group of speakers. Apparently, the wrong music was used for that group of speakers so perhaps that is why the sound selections were so bland.

Has this year's already happened? If not got an idea of when? I'm saving up my sick days, so I can get to the next one!
Oh, and Soundslike, I live just up the 17 from you (in Glendale), you're welcome to drop by and take a look/listen at/to my stuff anytime!

Re: Pictures from Dayton 2010
I agree completely with you; I liked the first set of music, and was pleasantly surprised, but didn't like the other two sets at all. It seemed counterintuitive that the only set of music that really had any dynamics was used on the under $200 Class for speakers most likely to have limited capabilities. The 3 vocal tracks used for the over $200 Class were not only unappealing to me, they simply did not stress any of the designs, allowing just about any speaker to sound pretty good. Anyway, the "classical" piece in the first set was an excerpt from Leonard Bernstein's Candide, sort of a light opera as he wrote it. The track they played wasn't nearly as dynamic as it could have been but it sure was better than nothing. The third set of music was just as unappealing but in different ways than the second set.

does anyone know what all (or any) of the songs were that were used? i think someone told me the first one was something from o brother where art thou? i'd like to give them a run here at home, to hear how my builds compare in my room to what i heard at the event.

Can anyone point me to an official recap of the event?
This string has been great, and I look forward to more posts. Thanks...

Ed: those look GOOD! I wasn't sure when I saw the pics if they were yours or not. Look forward to hearing them. Also look forward to some breakdowns on the projects - for everyone but the judges, it's tough to get a clear 'hear' in there.

Re: Pictures from Dayton 2010
Greg,
They'll play louder than I want/need them to...
Simulations from Martin King's Quarter Wave worksheets show a sensitivity of ~96.5 dB/w. As to attenuation due to baffle step, I must defer to Pete who understands the x-over much better than me.
The cabinet is tuned to 28-29 hz.
The division lines (green) are 2 dB apart.

Can you please tell us about your alignment of the 2512? How loudly do they play.

Re: Pictures from Dayton 2010
Pete asked:...what are your impressions of the presentation of the Econowave compared to the others in the category?
Let me say that PE ROCKS. I was aided in dialing in the cd (adjustment of the attenuation pot) through the availability of the measuring gear in-room. That removed one potential weakness.
These were next to last to be heard in the over $200 category. I knew before they played that it would be tough to break into the top 3.
One judge told me that he heard some "horn honk or upper mid-range cloudiness". On the drive home I came to the as-yet unproven conclusion that I overstuffed the cabs. The cab's are almost fully lined with Owens Corning 703. I used at least as much stuffing as called for through simulation. I may have been careless in distributing the stuffing...we'll see; er...hear.
On the other hand, people whose opinion I value, along with total strangers made favorable, encouraging comments.
I'll reserve my personal comments to this: it was a blast! :D
Not to be overlooked is CBT as discussed by Don Keele is the real deal.
Certainly not last: Anyone who can pass along our Best Wishes to Bogdan please do so. Let us know how he is doing.

The cabinets are shop-made cherry veneer over mdf; the backs are quartered sycamore; slot ported. They didn't place in the over $200 category. Many good speakers on hand.
Sure wish I could have been there to hear for myself.
