Thanks for posting all the pics so fast . I wish I had the time to come to the event today. When you get a chance and if you don't mind, give some of your thoughts on the speakers you listened to .? Some of those look great , like they were made at a custom cabinetry shop. I really like the look of those speakers with the dark middle wood and the light outside.
I hope that others will comment on the sound - I tend to be too picky compared to most and don't want to step on anyone's toes.
Hmm, I don't see any pictures of the "boom box". I think I can comment about that one. When it was tested it was being over driven and distorting. However, I could tell that it sounded pretty good when not being driven to high levels of distortion.
There was a neat flat dipole speaker where they guy has developed his own patented driver type. I think it's too bad he didn't use some "traditional" drivers with greater excursion to support [supplement] the low end.
I wasn't particularly fond of the test tracks used - I think I've never really liked the music chosen at any of these types of events that I've experienced so far, but, I guess it worked ok for the purpose.
They clearly did a better job of conducting the testing this year as compared to when I went in '08. There was at least an attempt at level matching (somewhat inconsistent, but, certainly a lot better than none).
It'd be nice to do the listening tests without being able to SEE the speakers, then evaluate them on their appearance separately later.

Well, the guy with the ugliest speaker I've ever seen got a prize, so it can't be ALL about looks, now can it?:D
Good stuff, Chris, keep it coming!
Mark
PS: NO offense intended, I'm sure it sounds wonderful, but the WAF on that thing is WAAAY low....
You go your way, I'll go mine. I don't care if we get there on time.
Thanks for the pics! Sounds like it was a great event.
Do the builders of the following speakers wanna chime in, or start a thread to talk about their choices, etc?
Peerless HDS woofer and ???
Interesting HE (presumably) speaker
The right way to do a compact speaker: augmented widebander (Peerless '970, I presume) covering most of the music, augments by a midbass (Peerless SDS or SLS?)

Yeah, I was afraid it wouldn't be able to handle the level they were using for everything else. The T-amp was giving its all but it just wasn't quite enough.
Yes, That is a QSC 152i waveguide backed by a B&C DE250 compression driver, over an Eminence DeltaLite II 2512. Thanks go to Pete for participation in the x-over development and Zilch for his unending support.
The cabinets are shop-made cherry veneer over mdf; the backs are quartered sycamore; slot ported. They didn't place in the over $200 category. Many good speakers on hand.

I know others have said that there were no dogs in the room, but what are your impressions of the presentation of the Econowave compared to the others in the category?
Sure wish I could have been there to hear for myself.
Pete asked:...what are your impressions of the presentation of the Econowave compared to the others in the category?
These were final assembled on Friday evening before the show.
Let me say that PE ROCKS. I was aided in dialing in the cd (adjustment of the attenuation pot) through the availability of the measuring gear in-room. That removed one potential weakness.
These were next to last to be heard in the over $200 category. I knew before they played that it would be tough to break into the top 3.
One judge told me that he heard some "horn honk or upper mid-range cloudiness". On the drive home I came to the as-yet unproven conclusion that I overstuffed the cabs. The cab's are almost fully lined with Owens Corning 703. I used at least as much stuffing as called for through simulation. I may have been careless in distributing the stuffing...we'll see; er...hear.
On the other hand, people whose opinion I value, along with total strangers made favorable, encouraging comments.
I'll reserve my personal comments to this: it was a blast! :D
Not to be overlooked is CBT as discussed by Don Keele is the real deal.
Certainly not last: Anyone who can pass along our Best Wishes to Bogdan please do so. Let us know how he is doing.
Simulations from Martin King's Quarter Wave worksheets show a sensitivity of ~96.5 dB/w. As to attenuation due to baffle step, I must defer to Pete who understands the x-over much better than me.
The cabinet is tuned to 28-29 hz.
Ed: those look GOOD! I wasn't sure when I saw the pics if they were yours or not. Look forward to hearing them. Also look forward to some breakdowns on the projects - for everyone but the judges, it's tough to get a clear 'hear' in there.
Lazily at home but having to fly out tomorrow to work / Robert
Here's hoping that those lucky enough to attend the event will take pity on those of us in Arizona, dodging incoming artillery and mortar rounds fired by angry HB 1070 foes, sweltering in the heat, and way, way, far away from Dayton 2010.
Can anyone point me to an official recap of the event?
This string has been great, and I look forward to more posts. Thanks...

i liked the first set, but didn't care for the other two. each of the three tracks in the first set were very different from the other two, and each seemed to show a different aspect of a speakers capabilities - first track obviously accentuated vocals/midrange, the second had good dynamics and tight midbass with an upbeat "rock" piece, and the third - the classical piece - also good dynamics, both in frequency and in volume, good test of low end with the tympani, and especially good for evaluating accuracy with individual instruments.
does anyone know what all (or any) of the songs were that were used? i think someone told me the first one was something from o brother where art thou? i'd like to give them a run here at home, to hear how my builds compare in my room to what i heard at the event.
