  • new project in works. PaperStone BBMTMBB

3.5 way loudspeaker for a friend. He's actually building it and I am doing crossover and tuning.
    Driver compliment.
    4 Dayton RS150s-8 per side
    2 Dayton RS52 per side
    Fountek 3.0
    Case work.
    Front panel: 1.25 Paper Stone
Sides 1" MDF, possibly CLD but not decided yet. Multiple bracing is a must.
Side panels will probably have Walnut veneer. My friend has a WOW bundle of Walnut with bird's eye/burl graining.

Will the RS150 not cross well with the Fountek? Just seems like it's a small driver to need to use a dome mid with. Also what's the simulated F3 with an RS150 that's used as a woofer?

      F3 is 46hz for RS150
RS150 will not cross at all directly to Fountek.
3.0 has energy storage issues at 2.2 khz and high distortions. Respectively RS150 has highish distortions in this area as well and a large cone brake up higher with all artifacts. The idea here is to have very linear FR, low distortions through every driver passband and excellent off axis response.

The Fountek likes to cross higher up than the RS150 is really wanting to go. The RS52 will make a nice bridge to fill the gap.

PaperStone is a beautiful and heavy-duty composite surface known for its performance, its warm touch, its contemporary appearance, and sustainability.

heavy as hell. non resonant. physically it's layered paper impregnated with phenolic resign. hard to machine but not impossible with carbide tools.

Just my 2c, but if he's going to all that trouble with the baffle, I would use a better mid.

Did you also consider soap stone in your choice of materials? Before choosing paper stone?

I would definitely check to see if you can route a clean edge in to the Paperstone material before dropping any $$$ on it. Some of these counter top type high-recycled-content materials don't cut cleanly. If you were planning to flush-mount your drivers, this could be an issue.

Machining paper Stone is tough but we already made countertops out of it. All the materials including drivers are leftovers from the job. I did a commercial sound system for a restaurant and my friend did fabrications in paperstone. I've helped to unload a 700 pound panel for fabrication so :D I know whats involved.
It's not for faint hearted and good dust collection is a must. Phenolic dust is a pure poison. Materials are free at this point. The only thing I paid for were Founteks. I'd never dreamed of just buying paperstone for a speaker project. 1.25 5x10 panel was around $2000.

Soap stone, not sure how to work it. Paperstone cuts clean with carbide.

Wofl, common man, rs52 is a great midrange if used in it's passband. Especially a pair with less excursion required.

I was looking into soapstone for a project at one point. The claim is you can work it with woodworking tools.

Could be interesting for someone with your talents.

Never heard a pair in the same speaker, but I've never heard an RS52 I liked either.

I have also decided to add rear mounted horizontal ribbon with level adjustment. Wanted to experiment with that for a long time.
