  • Need suggestions for iPod interface (just the basics)

I am building a small sub that has the amp/preamp and electronic XO all built into one unit. I also want to add an iPod doc of some type. I know there are tons out there but that only complicates things since I don't know what to look for specifically.

I really only NEED a 1/8" to RCA adapter to hook up the audio but I am also looking for something that might actually "mount" the iPod so it doesn't just have to lay on the top of the sub (priority on mounting a Classic, ability to hold a Nano would be nice but not a big deal if I cannot have both). Charging capability would be nice too but not a priority.

Basically a mount w/ audio out and charger. Any other bells and whistles might be considered too. Prefer something small so no clock or speakers...

    What have you guys seen?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

    I use this connector:

    http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/50-9185

It provides a line-level output as well as charging abilitiy for my 80 gig Classic.
You could fashion a "dock" of sorts to hold the iPod and house the cable. I just lay mine on the table! Use a 12 volt (preferably regulated) wall wart type power supply and you're all set.

    This one would work:

^^ That's probably going to be the best way to go since it will also charge the IPOD.

Funny, that didn't show up when I searched for iPod cables on PE's site.

But, that won't work with the iPod Classic, which is what Aaron has I think or the Nano 3rd generation either. Wonder why though?

Re: Need suggestions for iPod interface (just the basics)

Thanks for the input so far. I haven't quite found what I'm looking for though.

              The PE part specicically says:

"Philips SJM3140/27 is NOT compatible with iPod Touch, iPod Classic and iPod Nano 3rd Gen"

I found this cable on eBay last night:

              http://cgi.ebay.com/Ipod-Digital-Cab...item20ab553411

It is similar to the MCM part except it also has a video out. Not sure if my classic can take advantage of that or not (anyone know?).

Essentially the capabilities of that cable w/ a docking station would be ideal. I would prefer black but w/ so much of Apple's gear being white I won't hold my breath for it.

As far as power for charging, my plans already include a 12v wall wart to power the car audio 1/2 din electronis xo so I'm good to go in that area.

                Hey, DIY for the mount...

The back could be 1/2" MDF cut on a slight reclined angle, the two things that look like arms to a chair on the front could be made of wood with a layer of foam that would 'hold' the iPod with friction. The hole is where the connector would feed through.

This is just a quick sketch, but you get the idea. You could easily put something together that would look cool and use that iPod cord you found with the video output. Dress it up, rounded corners, painted, or possibly upholstered with a fabric or even left over leather from your wife/girlfriend's old pocketbook!

                Have fun!

The Apple dock, cable, and AC adaptor are obscenely expensive...so I would suggest Apple's dock, and one of the combo wall plug & charging cables (I think the one I carry in my luggage I bought at WalMart).

It may be too expensive, but with the also-too-expensive Apple remote, it works as my bedroom system (no amp, just straight in. Hey, I don't need much volume).

                    JOSR,
Do you have any links to the products you mentioned? I checked out Apple's store and saw some stuff that might work. I'm sure I could get it somewhere else cheaper once I make up my mind. I'm also interested in your remote, I didn't see much in the Apple store but I saw several on eBay. I'm guessing I won't get one item (not even counting a dock) to charge, audio/vid out and a remote. Some of the remotes interface w/ the 1/8" jack while most seem to go into the "dock port". I would probably need a jack remote since the dock remote would be used by the charger/audio/video cord.

                    Tom,
Nice work on the SketchUp. I might just do something like that, esp since it looks like this might end up being 2-3 seperate pieces even if I bought everything.

I still cannot belive no one makes a simple dock that allows you to basically mount an iPod and utilize the A/V outputs in a conventional manner as well as charge. I realize the remote option might have been on the extravagent side for such a design but it's not even what I was looking for initially.

But really, how hard would it be for someone to make a dock that basically converts an iPod to a remote controlled A/V player? All of the stuff to do so is already built in to do it.
                    Thanks,
                    Aaron

:DHey, I found something! What's funny is I was pursuing the "remote control" angle an typed "ipod remote" in PE's search engine and found this:

                      http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=181-338

A quick google search verified that they have as good of a price as anybody.

Color looks right. Only down side is that I don't see any reason to actually try to build this into the sub project (so no custom type stuff) but it will still sit on top nicely.

Thanks for all the input I received

It's been my experience with my iPod and iPhones that the output from the line-out jack on the dock is quite a bit cleaner than the headphone output jack. Scrounge Amazon for a dock and you'll have both a solid output and a way to charge the thing.

                          That's a nice find!

And I agree with you. Why doesn't someone make a simple cable that charges, has audio and video out, along with a simple dock for mounting that fits most iPods? Like you said, the tech is already in the pod, just need the cable and a plastic mounting base. I dunno...

Shawn is right. A few years ago, I plugged my iPod into the connector at the same time I plugged my headphones into the headphone jack, and the headphones volume worked independently of the line output. Line out is a cleaner, better option than using the headphone plug.

Hand Held Items has some cheap interfaces. I've order a couple of things for my iphone and have been satisfied with their performance to cost ratio.
