I look forward to seeing this finished system. It's fresh to see something that isn't a 5.25-7" 2-way, using increasingly expensive drivers.

I like 3-ways, and I think a well designed 3 way, even if they use standard quality drivers, can be fantastic, as long as you get the midrange right.

Even the most advanced 6.5" midwoofer is no match for an ordinary 10" woofer, and if you want full range behavior that gives 105dB in room (concert/near-realistic levels) a 2 or 2.5way, even using $200 midwoofers and $300 tweeters isn't going to do it.

I just did a shopping list- just $200 for 6 drivers. Nice!

Misseron: Typically this emoticon :rolleyes: is used when someone is being sarcastic. I was agreeing with Paul's statement about stamped frames. It will kill a lot of high $$ systems without a doubt. Do you like this better? " Agreed on the stamped frames.

Hey Paul - great idea!

I've had my eye on the 830657 for a little while (we're limited over here in terms of cheap driver choices) in a 2.5 way MTMMM to keep cabinet build complexity down, xmax down and tweeter at ear height (the truncated frames help here).

Have you done any floor bounce modeling with the woofer 1 foot+ off the floor? I can't remember the rules of thumb here so may not be an issue depending on your mid/woof Fc.

Well, they have a few rough spots, but nothing Bondo won't fix. In the next few days, I plan to add some bracing, install the drivers and then they can meet Mr. Microphone. I'm getting very excited to find out what kind of sounds I can get from these!

Well, then it sounds like "The Science Is In" on frame breakup. Did you have the ability to compare a cast and stamped frame version of a driver with the same moving structure and motor, mounted in a rigid baffle? Were you able to identify the natural frequency of the frame's own breakup? If you were exciting the frame near its natural frequency, you should have been able to identify the FR peak created by the frame. Then, upon locating that peak, you'd have examined the CSD plot to determine the time-domain effects of the frame resonance. However, if you weren't exciting the frame at its natural frequency, then you wouldn't have noticed anything at all.

Is this data posted online where I could see it?

I would think a stamped frame wouldn't be able to ring much once it is mounted to mdf ? If you take a bell and set it on top of a sheet of mdf it won't ring. I would think there would be a similar effect with a drivers frame.

You are an evil man, Paul. I have 'ideas' of builds i would like to do, but just this morning I was awakened during a dream about THESE EXACT SPEAKERS and some really loud Metallica! So I curse you, as now i must follow this as a "vision" to build these!

Off to the Pawn shop and flea market to sell, so I can obtain this very dream.

i have had some really strange dreams during my life, but never have had one involving speakers (diy or commercial). Music - yes, but not speakers themself. Does this mean in a few years i will have to go to speaker-rehab???

That's a good question, and I've been cogitating this part for a while. It can get EXPENSIVE!!! Here's what I've come up with so far:

8 of these and these + some 2-conductor speaker wire


or 8 of these and some regular speaker wire


Right now, I'm thinking 4-connector Speakon won't be too expensive, and is definitely dummy-proof. I would need 4 of each of these + a few feet of 4-conductor speaker wire


I priced out banana plugs and terminal plates, but gosh, that got expensive!!

I'm open to other ideas.

EDIT: Wait, I found the cheapest idea yet. 4 of this plus some regular speaker wire.

What about wires from the bottom of the MT and top of the bass box with some form of connecting ends so that the connectors are plugged in before the MT box is set on top. The connections will hide beneath the MT box. That way you would only need one pair of terminals at either the back of the bass box of MT box.

Whatever you decide, please take pictures, so we can see what you did.
