    Dean,
I'm sorry to say this, but I think I have to say no that the two woofers are too different. As it says, the buyout is "optimized for EQed sealed enclosure." This design is not that at all. Not that the buyout is a bad woofer, but I think its home is in a sealed nearfield monitor.

I'd suggest just going ahead and getting the 830668 for the design; it's a kick-a## woofer. Honestly, I've modeled pretty much everything out there, and the only other ones that can hit the same SPL and F3 in this size enclosure are made by Scan-Speak. You can probably resell the buyouts for a good price on eBay or a classified section of a board.

I think it would be neat if you made side panels for the top that allowed it to be aimed at the listener like Wilsons or Focals

        Paul,

Though not the answer that I was hoping for, Thank you for responding.

I am presently running some Nat P's on top of some bass bins and they sound great. Because they are very revealing, they don't always sound the best with some music. Thats why the Tarkus appealed to me, they appear that they could play loud and would make even some bad recordings listenable.

Maybe I should just look for a different MT or MTM to run on top of my bass bins. I will still consider the Tarkus as an option. I will also continue to use the Nat P's in a second system regardless of what I do. Oh well, the search continues...

Congrats on a great looking and reasonably priced 3 way.

That seems to be the consensus.I have been looking for a decent low cost woofer to use in a budget active 3 way(mated with the 830872 buyout's and SB Acoustics tweet) and they seem to fit the bill. For space reasons I would likely use mine in a 1.25 cu.ft sealed box and use an LT to gain back the extension into the low 30's.

          • damnit! ran out of veneer!

I was soooo close! Had all pieces cut, and was about 6" short on the last panel of the last enclosure.

This totally sucks. Now I gotta order another sheet of veneer just to finish one panel (granted, it's a pretty big panel: the side of the bass bin). No, I'm not getting another full 4x8 sheet, if I can help it; I'll call Tape-Ease tomorrow and see what's the smallest piece I can order. I hope this doesn't interfere with bringing them to Iowa.

The veneer is all on, and I'm 1/3 of the way into finishing. I decided to try Jeff Jewitt's guide on Mission Oak (Stickley) finish, so it's a multi-step process.

All the details needed to build a pair are in this thread, but I will do a clearer, easier-to-follow writeup on my website once I get the finish done.

Jeff's techniques have always been spot on for me. The only thing I screwed up in the mission finish, was bad surface prep (didn't sand enough). I'm looking forward to seeing them.

I have wanted to try a Stickley Finish for a long time. I covet the Morris chair and have been following this thread for a long time.
Good Day to the Creek, Please allow me to lay out the who, what, where, why, when and how... This is an invitation to all Creekers: Gary Zimmel and Walt Caza cordially invite you to join us in a remote build of a classic furniture project. We are each going to build the same Morris chair together, just 1975 miles apart. Even farther if you decide to play along! We have selected an attractive project that includes bow arms, through tenons, corbels and a 3 position reclining back.

I have a 4'x8' sheet of extra flakey QS white oak veneer waiting for my next speaker project. I look forward to seeing your results.

I also would like to try a fumed finish sometime. As a guy that grew up around blueprint processing with ammonia I at least know the pitfalls.

I found the Tarkus while browsing different speaker designs. I am thinking of building this design partly because it looks to be quite a departure from my Statement Monitors and 2RCC center that I am currently using. It also looks like a reasonably straight forward design with a crossover that shouldn't be too tough for a mere mortal to build. Finally, the price is right so why not give it a shot? I am planning on doing some minor customization to the boxes but volume should be very close to the original design and I will retain the baffle sizes and angles. Realistically, if I decide to go forward with it I won't get rolling for a while - I've got a vacation coming up, it is rather cold right now and I've got a lot of other things to finish up. But the planning has begun. I understand it is pretty much just a rocking speaker without the fine detail found in some other designs and I am under the impression that it is strictly for music, not HT. Is there anything else I should know about this design before I commit to the build? Although not why I would build them, how would HT sound through these?

                      Thanks,

                      Matt

In my mind, I think a speaker that's good at music can be good at Home Theater--but not necessarily the other way around. Anyway, I did watch a few movies through them, and they sounded good. They certainly have enough output--my understanding of "THX reference level" is to be able to maintain 85 dB, with 20 dB headroom. That's definitely within the range of the Tarkus.

So if you do build them, we like pictures

So, I am still really interested in building this design. Did anyone ever come up with a slick way of electronically coupling the two boxes together? I was thinking something like a large version of a banana plug and speaker terminal between the top of the woofer box and bottom of the mid/tweet box. My only concern there would be to make sure that there isn't too much lateral pressure put on the posts. I saw the various ideas a few pages back but I'm not sure if anything was implemented or not. I may look into that concept some more unless someone else has a good idea. Or maybe I will just go with the tried and true wire connection.

Another question, is there any reason to not put the port on the front of the woofer box? I do realize that with the angled baffle I would need to be careful in placing it so that it does not end up hitting the bottom. However, according to my plans I can keep it high enough so that the bottom of the flare is still 2" off the bottom of the box. There is some bracing issues to work out as well to make sure that they don't interfere with the port but I should be able to keep the bracing several inches from the inside port opening. Any foreseeable issues with that port placement (other than my kids shoving things down the port)?

I've got a vacation coming up in a few weeks but I can hopefully start making some sawdust shortly after I get back.

Can't help you with the wiring connection, but I will say that front porting is just fine for this design.

Thanks for your responses to my questions Paul. I am excited about this build. Good to know that the front port will be fine. I will probably end up doing what you did for the wiring as it seems to be the most straight forward and trouble free solution. Did you just loop a short wire from the +/- woofer terminals accepting the wire coming from the amp to the +/- terminals going out? Theoretically I could have two wired coming straight from the amp if I wanted to as well, one for the woofer box and one for the mid/tweet box, right?

Also, concerning bracing, I am planning on doing one routed out full horizontal brace about mid-way up to provide support for the sides. For the top/bottom support I am planning on one 3-4" deep vertical shelf on the top and maybe two on the bottom. Will that be enough bracing? I was going to put full vertical braces in but I want to be careful not to impede the port or the driver and I think shelves will work better in that regard.

                                Thanks,

                                Matt
