Re: Here is a very strange idea...

Recently, I've been reading a book on wood finishing that is actually a compilation of articles from Fine Woodworking magazine. So every article is, essentially, a different author. But it's still got quite a lot of information, even though it's not a soup-to-nuts book. So, such a compilation of speaker building and design articles might be a good idea.

The toughest thing, I think, would be making all the various authors happy. Some people are very particular about the "look and feel" of their websites, and also want control over who sees it and when.
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

I think jmc and Wolf should collaborate as the editors.

We are currently looking into this as it helps take care of the many questions a new member might have. I'm thinking a simple sticky with links to the various articles should suffice, but would like input.

        Thanks,
        Mike

Having frequently looked up Wolf's tips blogs while working with Jeff's simming tools I'd recommend linking to those as well as linking to Paul's FAQ pages on his web site. Providing links to some of the tools would be useful as well (Jeff's page, Unibox, and winisd immediately come to mind)

Perhaps a bit of narrative on the content of the links, and/or topics, (box construction, Xover design, finishing, ...)

Or a some kind of skill level rating (complete noob, done a couple, good at it, self appointed expert...)

If you will link in off site stuff, I'm sure we can all live with the usual legal disclaimers and 404 errors.

Re: Here is a very strange idea...

What I can do is turn this thread into a sticky to gather ideas, links, and personal permission from authors... that type of thing, for about a week to give everyone time to chime in.

After collection, we can start to sort all of the info into a Speaker Building Super Thread to be pinned.

I would prefer to keep links to direct pages that are either within the Tech Talk forum, or links to pages and programs that are ad-free (as much as possible).

Once we get a consensus, I'll rename this thread appropriately (thanks for the idea guys) and move forward. Sound good to everyone?

Wow, I got myself a sticky !!! Thanks Mike... :D

I don't have much time to get all that involved myself, plus guys like Paul and Wolfy do these things way better than I would, but I really hope you guys can get together and sort this out nicely. (I may have time to make a contribution if required, but it wouldn't involve measuring.. it would be "my way")

Go for it guys !! :D

Re: Gathering info for Speaker Building Super Thread

I myself would consider Paul's blogs to be more for the noob, and Wolf's for the more experienced/adventurous out there. In saying that, I'm pretty much ignoring Paul's projects (Of which most are pretty dang advanced, and all awesome), and focusing on his very sound advice on overall concepts for people starting out in the hobby.

Ben, on the other hand, gives more nuts and bolts descriptions of how to do EXACT procedures, and many of them involve a more thorough working knowledge of the concepts involved.

                      Call Paul's DIY 101, and Wolf's DIY 201.

I'm also not trying to denigrate or leave out the excellent work of dlr, jkim, zaph, curt c, and many, many others, it's just that those are the two I read most.

                      My 2 cents

                      Mark

PS: congrats on the sticky, Andy!
You go your way, I'll go mine. I don't care if we get there on time.

Sounds great, Mike! I think there should also be a way for new or new-found helpful articles, pages, blogs, etc. to be included as they come up.

Also, I think that 'Why DIY' (Paul's) page would make a great intro. http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...d.php?t=209867

Also his http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...d.php?t=218965 on designing without measuring equip.

                        Thanks for listening.

Re: Gathering info for Speaker Building Super Thread

Anyone got a nice flow chart or decision tree for speaker design-build? The point is to emphasize that the process can be really simple or really complicated depending on when someone decides to go with a standard design or kit versus working from scratch.

I think that would be real helpful for someone if they can visualize that they can simplify the process by making certain decisions at key points in the process. It might keep someone from discovering something like they "need" a custom crossover design to compensate for building a custom box or oddball driver selection. I assume I'm not the only one that has gone far down the road on a project before realizing that I could have saved much pain by taking a different turn three turns earlier.

I also think we need to be a bit careful to differentiate between getting "really good sound" and aiming at "measurable perfection"...

I know these are ultimately heavily linked, but we don't want to scare off the newbies.

We need to look at the "AIM' of the person doing the building.. do they want to just do one or 2 pairs, or are they in it for the long haul, with all the learning that is involved... naturally, the more we can hook for the long haul, the better. :D
If people want to listen to wiggles, that up to them....

What I'm thinking is walking someone from start to finish (step-by-step) in speaker design according to accepted practices. The hard part will be minimalizing opinion, especially since this will be peer reviewed, while maintaining progress.

Paul has written great FAQs, I like 'em...
