  • DIY NY 2010 Wrap-up!

I'm tired. What a beautiful day for some audio! Sunny, cool, and a lot of good speakers and great company!

First and foremost, thanks to Roman for opening up his shop for a place to gather. His act of kindness allowed us to put faces to names, and think-tank our collective knowledge for the greater good of the hobby.

While the pack all ran fairly tight and performed well, to me it was Face's (Mike's) seas/scan speakers and the lil' red pipes that stuck out the most.

The Seas/scan setup was all exotic drivers, and the performance was as to be expected. Extremely true to the recordings and sophisticated, refined and impressive. What is more impressive is the good integration, voicing, and presentation set fourth by the associated design work.

The red pipes were the shocker of the day for me. They were in the under $200 category. They were extremely natural sounding with "wall to wall" and "floor to ceiling" imaging, and you could listen to them all day... There is not much more you can ask from a speaker in this price range.

Below is a link to some pictures. I did not do a good job coordinating names to speakers. After a total of 7.5 hours on the road, and manning the CD player, my noted/pictures were a jumbled mess vs. my intentions. Oh well!

I look forward to everyone else's pictures and input! Thanks again and it was very nice meeting everyone! :D:D:D

p.s. There some speakers I may have not mentioned or missed, I apologize ahead of time, I am sure they will show up in the collective! There were many cameras there.

Thanks to everyone for showing up. I think it went great! Very educational for me. Lots of excellent speakers to listen to. I was so involved in listening that somehow didn't even take the camera out of my bag.
New Horizons made an impression. For a speaker of that size, bass was simply incredible. The over all presentation was very nice. Extremely well executed design!
Mike's Seas Excel monsters, simply shine on all kinds of music. Distortion free on any levels. Transparent sound with speakers disappearing behind the music. Not cheap in parts but on the same plane or better with commercial speakers costing tens of thousands.
There were a few others but I am tiered after 8 hours of listening and will do write up later.
From the well known designs: "Statements" just sounded great. Clean, smooth, detailed. Speaker like this, I could live with happily ever after.
Zaph's SR71 was extremely well balanced. It was impossible to find anything that it didn't do well.
Special thanks to Jeff for mixing and editing sample CD and making copies for all of us and Mark for doing paperwork, web site and figuring out scoring cards.
Again, my gratitude to everyone for taking time and bringing their speakers (sometimes weighting more then one man can handle) for a listening session!
Hopefully we can do it again in a few month.

I hear my "Canvas" were there...

Any thoughts on those from the masses?

Ugh. These are my one regret yesterday: I never heard them... They were on a table in the background and when I finally wanted to throw them on, I ran out of time. I was really bummed. Even my wife asked "did you get to hear Wolf's speakers?" :(

The Port and Terminal on them looked amazing. The sound was very easy to listen to and balanced overall.

                  Re: DIY NY 2010 Wrap-up!

Thanks to everyone who attended. Thanks to our host of course...Some of you came from pretty far away...

The winners of our somewhat informal competition was:

Under $200 R-Carpenter's Fountexk Two Ways
                  Over $200 MZisserson's "Red Heads"
In the Unlimitted Class Face's "Regals"

The room itself was a tough room. I know my speakers had zero imaging and soundstage, where at home they are pretty good. My crossover showed itself to be the complete mess that it is (I cant blame that on the room). When I am done with my current project, I may work on them...

                          Re: DIY NY 2010 Wrap-up!

First off, thanks again Roman for hosting and Mark for being secretary. :D

I had a great time, it was a great group of people and nice sounding speakers.

The two biggest shockers of the day for me were Mzisserson's "New Horizons" and Harvey's "Pipes". The New Horizons sounded huge for a tiny speaker, nice job. And Harvey's Pipe's demonstrated how well baffle less disappear.

There was not one bad speaker there, but just enough that I'm having a hard time remembering which were which... Others worth mentioning were Mzisserson's "Red Heads". The highs sounded excellent, great detail and timbre. Roman's Fountek towers, top to bottom an excellent speaker and a testament of how TL's can work. No big surprise, but Phil's ScanSpeak sub sounded great. And thanks to Asi for bringing his Statement Monitors. I've been curious to hear them for some time now and am glad I finally got my ears on them, they sound wonderful.

As for my project, the "Regals", thank you for the compliments. I know I need to work on the bottom end a little bit, some said they were bass heavy, others said it sounded like the woofer was hanging over a bit, I'm going to work on it this week.

Also, I hope next time there will be more competitors in the $1,000+ class.
