  • Another "What I Would Like To See From Dayton Audio" thread...

In light of the thread about the new Dayton Audio full rangers (nice looking drivers BTW), I thought I would mention some more DA stuff I would like to see.

Revamped "classic" line, maybe get rid of the 1983 rear mounting gasket and dimpled paper look. Something with a poly cone and a cosmetic stamped frame, perhaps. These types of drivers can be cheap to produce as evidenced by $25 offerings from Peerless.

Perhaps it could include a 4" model...

Extend the new aluminum cone neo woofer line to include a 6.5" and 8" model. I bet they would fly off the shelves, especially if they were priced competitively with the TB neo subwoofers.

Of course, passive radiators for the reference subwoofers!

Let's see... how about some Mylar capacitors, especially in some higher values for the guys who won't use NPE's? I have used the Mylar stuff from Erse Audio and they sound pretty good at a very nice price.

Car audio isn't going away anytime soon, could we see a component set based on a neo version of the RS28 and the 5", 6", and 7" RS woofers? These would probably sell really, really well as there are already a lot of people using the woofers in their cars.

How about a silver cone version of the reference woofers, or maybe a nice off-white. Black drivers are nice, but a lot of people go with other stuff because of how it looks, many people are still "appearance at all costs" type of people, and most of us (whether we acknowledge it or not) practice that to some degree.

Hmmm... I like that the RS line now includes a few tiny drivers, and it is obvious that PE is working their tails off to bring new drivers to the market place and we all thank you guys for that. Just because they are not drivers I am interested in doesn't mean I am not pleased to see what's new!
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

I agree except for the classic line. I feel the Classic line is the best series of paper cone drivers offered anywhere. While exotic cones may measure better most people like what they grew up with and most of us grew up on paper.

I want the RS series with paper cones! Less breakup, same motor.

I'd like to see a version of the RS series of subwoofers that uses poly cones instead of aluminium. That way I can use them in my car's trunk without worrying about the cones getting dinged or scratched .

Keep in mind guys, the RS line is defined as black aluminum cones, cast frames, and such. The RS28F is the only exception to the rules.

RSS passives also have my vote, but they are supposed to be pending...

I think the higher sensitivity RS 4" mid driver would have serious merit.

As to caps- I think PE could also create an uber-cap from maybe Jantzen or Erse to add to their line, as the 1% really are no different from the 5%, with just the extra verification on spec and measurements.

4" and 5" as a dedicates, 93-94dB dedicated cone mid range, for the love of all things good... Please!!!

I like the idea of something competitive in the neo line with the TB subs.

How about a super tweeter for that snazzy PS driver that was just released?

The importance being the continued focus on value. I still have yet to find a driver company that offers the consistent bang for the buck Dayton does.

Wolf, you never replied to my e-mail?! did you get it?

I'd love to see Usher put more of it's research and development capabilities behind the manufacturing and sale of very high quality electrostatic panels and ribbon drivers. Magneplanar has developed an enviable niche in the marketplace - garnering near legendary status for some of the products it has sold over the years. I love some of the BG products that PE sells but my overall impression is that some of the larger "ribbons" have been lagging behind in technology. There is so much more that can be done in this part of the industry that isn't being done. And with what little development we've seen over the years, although some of the products out there have done some great things, my overall impression is that the industry has really only just scratched the surface in terms of the potential that the technology has to offer - not simply in the area of transducer materials and design, but how these products can be intelligently and successfully implemented in a world class speaker.

I think innovation such as the Kippel, and not just the use, but understanding of newer material over the past 5 years have already produced some amazing new drivers. It is like a revolution is just in its infancy.

EDIT: Fix spelling from innovations suck, to innovations such :o

                      18hz is scary.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new top of the line type subwoofer from Dayton. Something with 25mm+ one way linear xmax in a 12" driver or so utilizing a highly linear motor system (complete with Klippel or Dumax reports). Pricing around $250.00 would be suitable in a 12" size.

Matching passive radiators up to 18" would be excellent to boot!

I don't use $200 and $300 drivers (since I believe in the diminishing return theory), but I think we have a loyal Dayton following here and they would move quite a few of them.

I am thinking something that is along the lines of JL Audio W7 TC Sounds level of performance in terms of power compression and linearity. There is very little on the market that can keep up with them in those terms. Knowing the performance capabilities of the reference series drivers, I would think they could approach W7/TC Sounds caliber of performance for around $250 on a 12" driver.
