  • What to do with a $500 budget?

My sister in law asked me if I would build a set of speakers for her husband for his not done yet bar. She said she wanted a "good" set of speakers and he would really like a set that I built. I asked what she had to power them with and she said nothing. She also said they don't have an mp3 player and mostly will listen to music on the radio with them, so my suggestion was a used receiver of some kind. So I'm thinking $100- 150 for the receiver which would leave $350 - 400 for the speakers.
I'm thinking these will probably be mounted up in the corners of the room behind the bar or maybe on a shelf. The room is roughly 20' wide by14' deep with 7' ceilings. She wasn't concerned about the size either.
Now the tricky part. I was at is house the other day, out in the garage, a song came on he liked and he turned it up to about 5 notches past distorted. He has his floor standing speakers up on a five foot shelf, six feet away from each other in the corner of the garage. So, I'm not sure imaging is that important for him. Probably something that will handle some wattage and have good bass will be more important.
Oh yeah, she wants them for Christmas. So, I'm thinking an already done design.
    Any idea's?
    Thanks Dave

Build an E-wave variant. They'll turn even a small power source into a room full of sound. He won't find the desire to turn it up to distortion levels.

I was thinking about the Continnums but I'm not sure if he would appreciate the sound quality. It seems similar to the link you provided. Looks like a great speaker, but I worry he will over drive them with the small woofer. Possibly with a sub picking up the bottom end. I will keep this in mind.

I'm sure there are a few that will come in at or below budget.

Zilch lists the links to the main pages of each variant on the first post of the PCD Mettle thread.

You're going to have to decide on the max enclosure size.

My first thought was something with the Seas L16 driver. It's not very efficient but it does provide very good bass in a small enclosure. Second thought would be the Exodus Anarchy. Both would be able to take the abuse.

I guess, but it still sounded like a horn I personally liked them. Quite a bit.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

I think I am swaying towards an E wave variant. I did follow the PCD Mental thread at the beginning but lost it through the summer during my ski season. Looking through some of the set ups in the thread reminds me of the speakers that use to hang on the wall at the neighborhood watering hole. I was always amazed at how loud and clean they would play. They looked to of had about a 10" woofer with a wave guide. They were a brand name I have heard of but can't remember what it was.
It seems like high efficient drivers are not going to play much below 45 hz. This would be similar to my Dock Box I built with the PA 130 drivers and thats not to bad. They do play loud with little wattage. He can always add a sub later if he wants to. I did hear the one Double Tap brought to InDIYana a few months ago and I believe he said he used a sub with his.
Any tips on what to build other then picking by price?

                        Mental - Bwahahaha. Love it!!

I'd go Deluxe, probably HO variant due to it's higher sensitivity, and build an enclosure to get the most from the low end. Then fill in whatever low end with a sub, as you mentioned.

Otherwise, you'll get reasonable sensitivity (90dB/2.83) with the Deluxe, with enough low end to forgo a sub for 95% of music.

But with the budget you have, the DC300 (Standard) would be the only one that will get you a pair of systems for under $500, with easily accessible parts.

Oops, the SR version also meets the budget.

                          No sub required with "Standard."

SR's no slouch, but does require a sub.

they can crank up pretty loud, but need a big amp to do it. And if you don't have it, you'll drive it to clipping, as the DA175 is a power hungry driver.
