  • Amiga or ZX???

I have been looking at the Amigas for my next project. They will be used for music and may be supplemented by some wall hung bookshelfs in the future. Not planning on a sub. Since the Amigas need to be reworked for the new unshielded RS180-8 I have also been considering the ZX.
-First I need to know if my cab design that is slightly different than the original will be acceptable. The original is 8"w x 11"d x 34"t. My cabinet design is 8"w x 10"d x 38"t. See pics.
-Curious on how the ZX stacks up to the Amiga.
-And Paul is there another tweeter you think might work better with the revised RS180-8 and would like to try. (Assuming of course that I would send you the components.)
    Thanks

I've not heard either but from Paul's notes on the ZX the one thing that I'd wonder about is if you'd be to locking yourself into using BG Neo3 for the bookshelf speakers in the future. This might not be a bad thing since it's supposed to be a nice tweeter just something to consider.

    Take it easy
    Jay

"The BG Neo3 is pretty well-renowned for being a very good tweeter, and it is. You will never hear any sort of hiss or hash from them. In fact, its frequency response has a wide dip centered around 7000 Hz, which is where a lot of sibilance happens in recordings. As a result, the first few minutes you listen to this tweeter, it will sound a tad bit "dark" (Please don't say "veiled." I hate that word.). Human ears quickly adjust, however, and after a song or two the music will be quite clear."
"I like Brewski's threads, they always end up being hybrid beer/speaker threads based on the name of his newest creation." - Greywarden

Have you considered these? I don't even know if maynard would be willing to share but I'm very interested in building these myself. Can't decide on bookshelf or MLTL.

        Mark,
Those look really cool. I'd be honored if you did an "interpretation" of them.

As for which one to choose... it's a coin toss, perhaps. I mean, there are a few small differences (the HiVi M6A has a little stronger bass than the Dayton RS180, and is just slightly "warmer" through the midrange)

You clearly have a strong aesthetic sense, so I'd say go for the one you like the look of better.

But alas, the Amiga is defunct until I get an unshielded RS180 to measure and voice. I'm open to trying other tweeters, too; all it requires is to be able to cross at 2000 Hz, LR4. (the Vifa XT25 taunts me to be tried with the RS180; even though it may be a complex crossover--or might not even work, altogether)
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

I considered the Continuum TL and also the Coppers which all share similar cabinet proportions. Both of these are very appealing designs but I liked the aesthetic of the Amiga's 7" driver on an 8" baffle. (In fact I worked on a new cabinet look for the Coppers a whilte back and could not come up with anything I liked better than Marty's original design. Simple and elegant.)

            Thanks for your kind comments.
Obviously I don't know squat about tweeters except that I like the concept of the Dayton RS28 series because of looks and the protective screen. The XT25 is certainly different looking. I brought up a different tweeter because you mentioned the DX25 was "lumpy" but got the job done. Plus I noticed it was out of stock for a while.
Not sure I about the Neo 3 of the ZX but I really like the looks of the M6N.

Mr. C willing, I am leaning toward a new variant on Paul's "old computer names" speakers. The components would be the new RS180 and the new RS28F. (Paul you could also give it an updated computer name. Core 2 maybe???) In reading there seems to be a lot of love for the RS28F and how low it can cross with minimal crossover parts.
Paul (or anyone interested in commenting) would this appear to be a good match for a two way "boutique" sounding speaker system. Something you would like to try? You could also update the TRS and Amiga's while you have the RS180's that are unshielded. Anyone foresee any problems, issues, upside, downside to this combo. Since they are both relatively new (and popular) then they may be around a while.

I think it all sounds like a smart idea. The RS28f should be no problem. I don't know about "Core 2"--almost too relevant. ;)

Guess Core 2 is not really a defunct computer name.

Add to that NeXT, Steve Job's creation after he was booted from Apple.

Or Lisa, both a woman's name and the name of a defunct computer. Can't go wrong with that.

I like that name. I remember when it came out. The XT seemed like a nod to IBM and a poke to Apple.

IIRC Lisa was not a popular girl. Kinda like the IBM PS/2 series that killed IBM. Proprietary Micro Channel designed to stop the clones. And lucky me bought a few 80's and a 60.

I'll add Athlon to your list of defunct PC processors. Think I have a couple of old gaming rigs in the basement that still have gen 1 and gen 2 athlon CPU's in them.

See? You guys are geeky about more things than just speakers ;)

I remember when NeXT came out, too. When stuff is that proprietary, I don't know how they think it's not going to bomb. They did look pretty slick, though.

(glad to know I'm not the only one who remembers all this geeky stuff)

I'm only kidding that the RS180/RS28 tower should have a defunct name; I think it's actually a pretty state-of-the-art combination (not counting super-high-end European drivers)

Anyway, Mark, I'm curious to try the design with both the silk and aluminum RS28; I already have the aluminum RS28 on-hand.
