  • Need Some Help

I am currently a college student in a ceramics class and one of our projects is called blow up, basically we take a small object and make it big, so i am taking one of my skull candy ear buds and making it 20" by 18" with a diameter of 12", so my professor and i had this idea that after im done with it to actually wire it up. So i got like three questions:

    1. What is the best woofer, tweeter, and mid combo, but remember i only have about 10 inches to work with.....if this is unreasonably i have plans where i can move stuff around and get a lot more room, two options being
    i. either a woofer, tweeter, and mid all fitting in the area of 10 inches
    or
ii. a woofer no bigger then 10 inches and a mid no bigger then 4 and a tweeter no bigger then 2.5 inches.

    2. I want this to be a simple head phone jack plug in so i can connect friends ipods and stuff when they come over, so i need a way to convert from the 3.5 mm head phone jack to connect to the speakers

    3. I need to figure out if(and if, how) i need to power all this. My friends just told me to take one of those basic speaker sets that you can get at the store and tear it apart and put the parts in this thing but i want to build it myself, thats half the fun of this project.

thank you so much in advance, i will post pictures when as the project comes along, who knows if i enjoy maybe ill make more to sell :-).
thanks and have a great day.

I guess you're only making 1 speaker, so you could do a stereo-ish setup with the Dayton T-amp kit and maybe a set of small bookshelf speakers with crossovers.

You could try one of the pioneer 8" coax speakers. They are vary efficient and will eliminate the need to build a crossover. You could power it with a small boom box witch would give you more than enough power to drive it. Simple and cheep.

yes, a coax or a fullrange driver. the t-amp would work fine.
can you determine the area of the bud?

              Re: Need Some Help

inside there is a lot of area, the ear piece, is 12 inches in diameter, by 12 inches tall, so about 400 cubic inches inside, and the ear piece which will house the speaker has a diameter of 10 inches and is about 8 inches tall, so also plenty of area inside there

I just thought I would link some of this stuff for you
                Here is the pioneer 8”

also a 6 ½” coaxial car speaker might work
                here is an inexpensive amp

or this T amp with no housing could be integrated

I would put a lot of this or some other fluffy stuffing behind the woofer if the back side is enclosed

good luck and make sure to show us pictures after you are finished
                Thanks'

                  Re: Need Some Help

If you are only building one, this may be of interest.

Will give you 2 channels from one speaker plus the grill and look of the speaker may work well for replicating an ear bud. No crossover to build makes things a lot easier also.

If you search PE there are a few other in wall/ceiling single stereo speaker options.

                    Re: Need Some Help

Love the idea of a dual channel speaker...didnt even knew they made them, haha

so i tentatively decided on this speaker,

and now i need to decide on an amp,
the problem i have is i cant find an amp that is the right watts.

this project is gonna be fired in the next week to week and a half and will be glazed and painted the week after its fired, so ideally id love to have everything picked out and delivered by the time i get it home...which might be harder then it sounds sense i live a mile off campus, no car, and this speaker is gonna weigh class to 70 lbs :-(, guess who's "borrowing" a shopping cart from safeway

don’t worry you won’t need a high power amp for that speaker. Really almost any amp will do. I would still suggest the ones I linked before. The little aluminum one would be a little less expensive since it comes with the power supply
                      Thanks'

Thats a nice speaker but I couldn't find anywhere on the write up if it comes with a built in crossover or you have to make one for it. Maybe I just missed it. I like that little amp that Texan come up with ,I could use that in some projects I want to do.

Phillydogg, if you want to save some money on the speaker there are some other options out there. Here's a quick search on Amazon. BIC makes an 8" for half the price of the PE one.

Are you in Philly? If so let me know I might be able to help you out on the pickup or the speaker if needed.
