  • Look what I scored this morning

Found this listed on craigslist. Picked it up this morning for only $40!

It obviously has surface rust on the table top, but everything works perfectly. The blade bearings and lead screws run true and tight. The rust should clean up easily with a wire brush on a drill. Should I hit it with a couple of light coats of clear after that? It didn't come with a stand, but I can easily weld/frabricate a big old sturdy stand for it. Are there accurate aftermarket rip fences available?

Forgot to mention that it is belt driven with a 3 hp motor. And the table is twice the size of what I've been previously cutting with:

I usually just rub on some paraffin wax after cleaning the top. Protects it and makes for smooth sliding.

Paraffin wax? Like a car wax?

I'd use one of those nylon type of scouring pads on a drill, instead of a wire brush. You know, the green or brown variety, Scotch Brite. Wire brush will certainly knock off all the rust, but will only make the top rougher. On my old table saw I finally used something like 600 wet or dry to polish to a smooth finish.
Yes, use paste wax, something automotive. Protects against rust and allows the wood to slide easily.

Automotive wax often contains silicone. If that gets on wood, it can cause "fish eyes" in a clear finish, so is not recommended. Johnson's or Minwax paste wax is good. I've heard good things about Topcote, but haven't used it myself.

Wow... looks just like the old, used Craftsman I have. You got a better deal, I had to fork over a big $75.

I was happily surprised to find out I could get a manual from Sears.. they had it in my mailbox inside of 3 days. Has the detailed setup instructions, pretty decent exploded parts diagrams. Seems like a lot of parts and options are available, there's a list in the manual. Mine has solid edge tables that go over your framework. You could probably get the sheetmetal stand that goes with it.

A good tip, Woodcraft has adjustment kits that go on various saws, got the one for the Craftsman and it's worth it. Adds threaded screw adjustment for the blade alignment, beats the heck out of the standard "loosen bolts and hit with hammer and block" method.

                    Happy Sawing...

Well, some kind of wax, darn it.
Good to know, I never consider it a problem since 99 percent of my projects are cut from MDF.

Thanks guys, great advice! Tomorrow I will be tearing it apart for a serious cleaning. My biggest question is if I can buy a high quality fence to install on it? I can fabricate and weld any needed mounting tabs.

That's the same exact model my dad has. He lives in FL and has to sand it down and coat it every couple years, but it's about as old as me (23) and works just great.

Great find!! I have that same saw-had it for probably over 20 years now. I upgraded the fence with one of the Craftsman aluminum ones some time back. I still have the original fence somewhere in my little shop. I'll make you a great deal in it if you want it, but there are much better options out there...for a price!

I would say build your own base. The one that came with my saw is nothing special and a little wobbly for such a heavy saw. As for getting the top back in shape, I just use my random orbit sander with a used 220 grit disc every once in a while. Then I seal it with something called "Next Dimension Metal Sealer 3" that I found at one of the local contractor supply houses. I just Googled it and it's NLA, but it's probably the same as Topcoat, being an anti-corrosive sealer. It's good stuff! It's probably time for me to polish it up again!
