Yeah, I just saw that interview on NPR's website a few days ago. I remember learning about his "golden ear audiophilia" back in high school, when I was really into shredders. My friends and I were so amused that he was so stubborn with his equipment. It took him several years to record and re-record his album "Venus Isle" because he didn't like the way it sounded. He ended up having the studio re-wired at least once (with polarity markings, no less) in order for it to sound right. I also remember that he only used Duracell batteries in his effects pedals because he claimed they were the best-sounding.
The irony of it all is that he also suffers from tinnitus.
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

I don't play guitar, but so do I, and am I picky about sound?? Noooo......:rolleyes:
My case is not severe though, and I do take safety precautions a lot to keep what I do still have.

is one of the coolest Vai performances on YouTube.
I haven't seen very many of my heroes live, but I have been lucky enough to see EJ twice. Luckier still, the first time was at the Cleveland HOB, and the opening act was a (then) up-and-coming 6-string heroine Kaki King.

That Vai clip was pretty good. Reminded me of this one (one of my favorites from my college years)

Now that I'm older, I prefer this. In fact, I could listen to this song non-stop and not get bored of it.
I know what you mean "now that I'm older..." I still enjoy to see/hear Vai, Satch, Lynch, Malmsteen, etc etc, do their shredding. But even though I can appreciate it for what it is, I can't put it on the stereo and listen to it as music like I could when I was a teenager.
My favorite guitarist... has also become an inspiration to many.
He was one of the first "both hands on the fretboard" style acoustic musicians.
He never picks strings.

I just checked out Eric's album Up Close on the Zune marketplace, and even compressed, the sonics of that album are just stunning. I will be buying Up Close as soon as it comes back in stock on Amazon.
