  • My Bose 601 Series II Idea

So I am getting some Bose 601 Series II from my buddy for $20. From what he was saying I gather that the woofers need to be refoamed. However, my idea was to replace all the drivers. However I have some questions.

I haven't picked these up yet and was wondering if the Bose 601 is only a 2 way and not a 3 way system. I think I read a while back that the Bose 301 is a 3 way and that the 2 tweeters are crossed at different points. So is the 601 the same thing??? Also if anyone knows the crossover point off hand that would be helpful too.

So my question is if it is a 2 way system (4 tweeters & 2 woofers per speaker) should I replace the originals with 4 new tweeters, or get 4 full range speakers?

Or if it is a 3 way, should I get 2 tweeters, 2 woofers, and 2 mid range (3") speakers? Also keeping the mid range speakers in the original tweeter location (on top) or should they be in some sort of enclosure.

Or... I could just refoam the woofers and sell them (& split the money with my buddy)

FYI, if you haven't figured it out already I am a noob so please be kind.

    THANKS!

The "duel" crossover that Bose uses is that the woofer has no xover and it's response "breakup" overlaps with the tweeter.

I remember listening to some 601's *back in the day*.....glorious, room filling sound.

I suggest you refoam and listen to them!

While in the sevice in the early 80's i had both the 501's and the 601's. Granted i know a little more now than i did back then i thought they also sounded great. Everyone it seemed owned a pair of Bose in the Army at some point....Also the 301's were also nice sounding......

Okay present day......I love the speakers that i have built...Thank You Curt for your designs....

VW1974, one thing that's being tacitly said in the responses so far is that attempting to replace all of the drivers in the 601s is not recommended, because trying to do so would require nothing short of a complete re-design of the speaker, which requires resources and knowledge that you may or may not already have, but if you did have them, you'd more likely be out there doing what you propose, instead of asking the sort of questions you're asking. At the very least, redesigning the speaker would require you to purchase measurement equipment and some tools, and investing the time needed to understand loudspeaker theory and effectively use the measurement and design tools that are available. Some people on this forum have taken these steps in order to develop multiple designs of their own that are of quality and craftsmanship, but for a single project, it doesn't make a great deal of sense to make the investment.

I would echo the recommendations from the other posters in the thread that you're better off refoaming and repairing the 601's in whatever ways necessary to restore them to near their original condition, and then living with them for whatever they do or don't do, or else forget about the purchase entirely and start researching existing speaker designs that you can build according to the plans that will satisfy you long-term.

As long as all the tweeters are still working, I'd just re-foam the surrounds and re-cap the tweeters with some Dayton poly's.
If the speakers then don't do it for ya', you should find a better pair of Vintage speakers to repair & upgrade or build a new pair.

              The caps are poly already.
