  • Midwest guys - be prepared for days of power outages!

Anyone along the I-44 corridor through OK and MO, then the I-70 corridor into Ohio ... get ready for potential of numerous days of power outages. We have possibility of .25 - .5 inch of ice, then 6" to as much as 18" of snow on top of that. As widespread as the outages will be, and as hard as downed lines will be to reach, if your power goes out it will likely be out for some time.

Here's the precip forecast in liquid equivalent, remember 1" of liquid precip equals ~12" of snow. A big part of the Midwest is is in the 2"+ range.

Fully functional generator and furnace hotwire kit in the garage - though Louisville may (hopefully) get all rain. I hate the freezing s*it! Snow is fine, rain is fine, ice = bad juju.

It does look like IN and KY are "under the mushroom cloud" though.

    Cheers / Robert

Thank God I got out of there. Hope my parents don't experience any of that.

already have a generator that was bought for the 2006 ice storm. Im tired of the cold! Worst time of year to work at a company that repairs plows. Or the best time depending on position of employment

I would be really, really concerned if the local weather guys HAVE NOT made a big deal about it. Seems to me that when they make a big deal out of something, it ends up being much smaller of an event. It's when they don't cry wolf that you need to gas up the generator!!!!

I finally got a natural gas log installed in my disfunctional fireplace about a month ago. We get ice storms about 2x a winter, and it's a big comfort to know that we'll have heat in any case.

+2 (one for me, one for my wife--we're both teachers, always wishing for those elusive snow days)

Hmm, I just got a generator... maybe I should go get a transfer switch and wire it in. I can't really stand the thought of my wife and 3 month old at home w/o heat and water. :(

Better drag out the generator and fire it up. Looks like heavy ice Tuesday night followed by 3 inches of snow here. Thanks for the heads up.

Eh, I guess it depends on which part of the midwest you're talking about... We usually only have 2-3 months that I can't get the 2-wheeled vehicles out in. I'm finding it extremely difficult to do my triathlon training indoors right now, so I'm ready for warmer weather, bot not too warm!

The new woodburning stoves work very well. No more worry about frozen pipes and the heat going out. We put one in the basement when we upgraded from oil/steam to gas/hydronic and gained a spare chimney flue.

I hate the power failures. A few years ago we lost power for a week and then a week or two later lost power for two more. The only thing worse is the racket my neighbor's generator makes, which is why I don't have one.
