  • Face-Swap! Tweeters will get transplant...

I recently received a set of SS D2905/97000 tweeters with the old face style, and they are slightly mangled up, even though the tweeters test out okay.

Since i can't just buy most any tweeter face for any driver I want, I searched with what I had on-hand. The RS28A's I have stashed looked similar enough I did a surgical removal, and checked out they are virtually identical!!!
The only difference would be that the RS28's have a recessed screw mount and driver mount set of holes, whereas the older 97000 do not. When I looked up the 97000 in my 2008 catalog, they look as the ones I have, but on-line they look like the Usher, and Dayton varieties.

It should be nothing more than ordering up some trunkies from PE to get replacements for them!

So- I guess they fit Usher, Dayton, SS varieties of tweeters, and maybe more.
    WOOHOO!!! :D

    ...and add a Destination....

Thanks to Maynard, since he wasn't quite happy with the low end extension he would get from the drivers, asked if I wanted them back.

Yes- you heard and postulated correctly; I recieved the Airborne FR213-B8-10M back this afternoon!

So- I will be making another large 8" 2-way with the Airbornes and the SS tweeters discussed VVV in this thread previously; likely towers.
Free support for loudspeaker projects, sourcing OEM speaker building supplies, and passive crossover design. We sell raw speaker drivers (tweeters, woofers, subwoofer, midrange drivers, full range drivers), speaker kits, amplifiers, capacitors, resistors, and inductors.

The trunky-replacement faces will allow the closer spacing required, and the 213 is wideband, while the 97000 is robust. Should be a fairly reasonable xover.

The two following attached alignments are where this is possibly headed...

The vented yields an Xmax breach about 28 Hz, and the PR breaches at 25 Hz. While the vented may be flatter to ~40 Hz with an F3/10 of 38/33 Hz, the PR design has an F3/10 of 127/35 Hz. VERY gradual rolloff on that one.

I'm inclined to think I can over-BSC comp the design, and use the PR alignment to get a flatter overall summation and with room gain balance everything out rather well. Combine it with getting the PR's closer to the floor, and it may get simpler.

    Stay tuned,
    Wolf

Well, if anything ought to make Wolfy's day, it'd be getting those Airborne woofers back. All day, I saw you eyeing those things like they were the girl you wanted to ask to the dance... ;)

I'm very happy for you that you got them.

        You got that right!

It was very hard for me to bring them to the event in the first place.
If I was a dishonest person, they never would have made the trip to be on the table.

        Thank you Mr. Maynard!!

So- waddayatink of the alignments, Paul?

I'm a vented guy myself. And the vented alignment you have there looks good to me. However, I have heard quite a few of your PR implementations, and so I have faith that you could pull off an excellent PR alignment.

I don't know if Maynard was turned off by the Airbornes for the same reason, but when I saw their Qts was ~0.24, I knew I'd never want to use them; they'd never work anywhere near well much less acceptable in a TL. Not saying for the moment they aren't good drivers or that you shouldn't be deliriously happy with them Wolf, just that I would have no use for them. Enjoy!

Those are some suave looking drivers!! I checked them out and can't believe an 8" carbon cone woofer dosen't exhibit the normal crazy break up in the upper freq. response normally associated with stiff coned woofers. If that freq. plot is anywhere close to being true that's a hella nice choice for a two way with any tweeter ya want, ehh? Should be a cool build! So did Solen give them to you to give away at the show, or did you already own them and for some strange reason decide to part with them?

What I need are 2 face plates for the 9900 revelator. Mine are truncated, and when I put them in a new project it is a small PITA. I could just put them in the RS face plates and start calling them 9700.

Yeah- the vented alignment looks decent, but maybe a bit lumpy in-room. I suppose room-gain may make it a complete wash. I like the smoothness of the PR alignment, so I'll have to see what I like better. Being the plot is with 11 watts, I believe I can sacrifice a bit of sensitivity to get the better and smoother extension.

Paul K- He just wanted a deeper extension capability, and more Xmax to drive.

6th- There is some measured energy storage around 700/800 Hz that I may have to notch out, but in the free-air tests I could not hear it. They were for the door-prizes from Solen, and I got to play with them ahead of time to make sure they were viable. ;) I had a set of the wood-cones a couple years back, and the FR must've varied a bit from spec, so I don't know if it's really that nice or not. If it is wideband like shown, it should be a relatively simple xover. The cone is not straight, but a curvilinear-woven CF cone, and that may be the edge it has in the absent breakup.

Chuck- Yeah- I think most everyone picked it up and drooled on it! I just got lucky that Maynard didn't find them suitable and asked me.

chag- As I recall, they are pretty much the same tweeter, and you could probably do just that!

                    Fun times ahead....

Grats on getting the the driver. From the solen images and the unibox sims it looks pretty sweet so I'll look forward to seeing what you do with them.

                        "Destinations" Simulation progress....

Just completed the initial simulation, and the parts count gets kinda heavy.
Because the Airborne needed such a stout rolloff inductor to facilitate strong BSC and a flattish FR, I had to comp the created bump with a larger inductor. (It's nice you can get a few of these type inductors on the buyout HP/LP passive subwoofer xovers.) There is still a slight 'presence' bump that should be benign.

Then- I compensated the resonance area in the woofer just in case it was necessary in listening tests. Being where it is, of course that required some larger copper as well. It's about 3-4dB without it, so I'm hoping I can do without it and redesign for a higher overall output level.

Overall, it's a BS2 at 1720, and the SS tapers off to 4th order placing the Fs at -20dB from nominal level. Damped 3rd with quasi-pad-zobel on the tweeter, and a 12dB with a LR filter and shunt-notch on the woofer.
Simulation is at a nominal -10deg off axis, more will be declared on that later. Off-axis is not fantastic, but decent for an 8" 2-way, especially considering the offsets involved. Sensitivity is lower than expected (82.5), but I suppose it was going to be that way having to tilt down the FR so strongly to flatten it out.

So- the TM-PR-PR or 'TMPP' will most likely happen.

                        The gritty follows attached below...
