It's attractive! I thought perhaps there was an advantage over flush mounting the woofer.

Recessing it like that allows for a better acoustic center alignment, since the guide offsets the tweeter by 2" and the slant, even further back. It also allows the woofer to simply be clamped down by the baffle face and the inner baffle the woofer sits on.

With the baffle vertical, flush mounting to the baffle front would be a great way to go. The L.O.K.I. project will do just that.

They look even better in person. Cabinets are real works of art. And dead dead dead.

Pete has said he's tweaked the sound since I heard it, and wow did what I hear impress me. Really put waveguide on the map for me (admittedly a newbie to speaker design).

Ed's making some matching stands. The unfinished prototypes are below. He's scooping out just a bit more material on the upright piece below the vent.

The upright pieces are to be painted to match the cabinet sides, the top, to match the cabinet baffle.

What do you guys think?

My first impression is they're beautiful by themselves but don't integrate as well as they could with the speaker's design.

I think they should coninue the lines of the enclosure to the floor, and the back leg does this well.

The front and side legs need to have a little better "flow".

Make sense?

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

I think if you moved the "toe" of the front leg further forward and made the curve like a bass clef, you'd be right there.

Once the uprights are that same Cadillac Black Diamond, they'll visually become harder to distinguish, and form a more solid shape. I'm anxious to see how that affects the look.

I don't know I've I've said it before, but the MiniByzy is one of the most visually strking design objects I've ever seen...period.

I really think they're something special.

I'll have to pass along your suggestion. It would certainly follow the line a bit better, but the protruding beam might pose some other "tripping" issues. The center of mass of that cabinet is in the back half, actually directly over the vertical beam that runs side to side.

But I get your idea . . .

Pete, I like the style, but they look very tipsy, considering the weight they support! The bottom of the base just looks too narrow in the pics to be stable when bumped by a child.

I have always been a bit concerned with my own Modula MTs on a relatively tall stand.....heavy speaker with little mass under it.....a formula for disaster if there are children in the home. If there are never children around, it may not be a concern, but few homes are always without visiting (if not resident) children.

I'm with everybody else.
Where's the 'substance' or 'heft' that
the cabinets inspire or beg the stands to have?

I would be leery of putting those cabs on those stands.

But I get your idea . . .

When I first saw them it took me a long time to realize the front baffle was flat and not curved like the other surfaces.

I'd suggest the tip of the "clef" should end where the baffle would touch the floor if the plane were extended.

It's hard to tell from the angle of the photo if the side and back legs continue the curves that end just above them, but if not, I'd suggest they should.

The speakers deserve a stand that equals and complements their beauty.

OUCH!!! A hippo balancing on a bar stool? HA! I was trying to minimize the stands mass; the speaker shape is "heavy" enough. I've tried different shaped bases; some 2 tube to 3 tube design ideas; nothing seems to fit the Aurora until this one. It may look "flimsy" but it actually is made from 1" thick Plumcreek MDF. Its more like an I beam than a speaker stand. I think it'll hold at least 300lbs. I'll see where it breaks at; I have 700 lbs of weights here. I think it'll hold it all. I'll spray the prototypes black and take pics of them holding up their "Hippos". I think the black will work better than the raw MDF. Funny you should mention the bass cleft; my first design was that exact shape with 2 tubes running vertically through it to hold the top and bottom apart. I couldn't bend 1/8th hardboard that severely. I put too much time in the speakers; spending another 20 hours on fiberglass for stands isn't in the cards.

I like the look of the stand. If you want to take away some of the "hippo" look maybe beefing up the feet a little bit.

This is a crude paint drawing but gives you the idea.

What I like about the Clef idea is that you would then have something paralleling the angle of the baffle.
