  • Russian bypass cap test

I bought 20 of these Russian PIO Caps (K40Y-9 0.1uF 200V) to try as tweeter bypasses.

I hooked them up to my A/B switch jig for a quick listening test and I think they make noticeable difference that I like....subtle, but it's there.

I'd like to get some more opinions, so I'm willing to ship a few of these pairs out to folks who have the setups to test these. So......If there is anyone who would like to try these and provide feedback on this thread, please PM me. I'd like them to be shipped back to me after testing, but I'm not in any rush to get them back.

If the tests aren't blind, they aren't valid... otherwise, if you think you like them, just install them....

Oh, it's there - subtle, probably too subtle for you (or certainly me) to hear, but it's there. :D

Any empirical evidence of what bypassing caps could possibly do? I've read a few things, but I'd like to see a civil, objective discussion on a board like this...

When it comes to discussing caps, the record here of 'civil' discussions isn't very good - nor is it anywhere else. They all start out with the best of intentions, then typically degenerate into a subjectivist vs objectivist flame war. :(

Sorry for playing devil's advocate here...

Are you sure the difference is for the better? Or, is it just "different"?

Do you think there's a difference?

Are you listening to the speakers, or will they be for someone else?

If you do find a difference, or think there is, and the speakers are for yourself, why do you want someone else's opinion? Use them!

208 views and not a single offer to have a pair of these shipped out for testing.....but I see the smarta$$ thread tagger stopped by . Wonder when one-star guy will leave his mark.

Anyway, I will do a couple FR readings on my speakers with and without the Russians to see if it can pickup what I think i'm hearing.

I'm still open to sending these out to anyone who has an external XO and a decent setup for their own testing.

Oh lookie....the one-star bandit dropped by. Thanks jacka$$.

Anyway, I took pink noise measurements of speakers with and without the Russian bypass caps. This is what I got. I'm still learning how to use True RTA, so if there are any obvious mistakes, please point them out and I will remeasure.

All I can tell from this graph is that these speakers have a crappy FR. The BLUE LINE is without the bypass and the GREEN LINE is with the bypass. Essentially the same as far as I'm concerned.
