  • "Trichotomy"- an oddly non-disparate design...

Just a prequel. I measured the impedance/TS and resimmed from the foundation, and it was rather close initially. One woofer needs some breakin! I did overlap the drivers in the sim to get a closer CTC, but the pic does not show that.

From the poet Louis Zukofsky's 3 aesthetic elements:
    Shape. Rhythm. Style.

    Here's some data... +/-2dB.

    Later,
    Wolf

PS- that is inches, Photobucket rescaling was weird...

    Very nice fr,phase as well.

I like the driver choice but will the Neo3 like going that low ? And maybe you could try switching the D5G with the D5.8 ? Looks like the D5.8 has less of a spike from 1-2khz and it seems to break up nicer than the D5G.

I also like how the D5.8 looks all black with the voice coil.

Looks good Ben, but will that much crossover fit in that little box?

That question is a hallmark of all Wolf designs! ;):D
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

This is hilarious...I was going to be designing a set with these exact drivers only in a larger enclosure. Wolf, did you break in the woofer you have the TS params for up there? I pulled one from stock the other day and I'm getting an Fs as high as 60 and a Q at .59 with no break in...I guess I didnt think it would change that much. Maybe I'll model using your specs.
            Your results may vary.

              Nice driver combination!

Having used the D5G with a Morel soft dome a few years back, I can just imagine how sweet your driver combination is going to sound.

It'll be interesting to see what finish you come up with for that tri-cky cabinet

                It's LR6 acoustic at 1.9kHz. I've seen it used to 1.8kHz, LR4.
                Yeah- it should be good!

No- I'm not switching drivers, plus I already have the D5G's.
                D5.8:

                D5G:

The spike is about the same magnitude. I know the midrange resolution the paper-kevlar F6 puts out, so that is one of the reasons I went with it. Also- the rolloff above the spike in the D5G can be used for augmenting the rolloff for a steep alignment easily. It actually made the xover fairly simple.

That all said- the drivers are similar enough it could be a possible drop-in replacement if you wanted to try it.

You guys crack me up!!! :D:D

If I go outboard-style, I could make the cabinet taller and mount underneath easily enough. I've always entertained the idea of a cylindrical case for the xover, and it could be fun to see how small I could make it packed into a 2.5" diameter PVC conduit.

We'll have to see how it goes. It's probably close to impossible to get them inside the box with the drivers and port present.

                  The drive for this design-
-a 5" driver in a 4.5 ltr box with bass that could breach 50 Hz in-room, and still take quite a bit of power!

The one pictured seemed to be very loose and well broken in. The other unit looked like this attached below, closer to spec and your measured specs. Being that the higher Fs unit had a much stiffer suspension, I guessed breakin would derive closer to the one I pictured earlier.

It's really easy moving the suspension on the lower Fs unit. FWIW- the variance was only a few Hz difference in box, as I modeled both of them to see if it would shift much.

I guess I'm glad I posted this before you did yours...:D;)

I was recently informed that HiVi is disco'ing the little yellow wonder I picked for this project, but the 'black sibling' is apparently alive and well. So most of you seriously entertaining these will have to investigate the darker side of this project anyway.

It really should be a minimal adjustment to swap in.

No pics, but I have the main panels cutout now. I still have to do the driver cutouts, and then the edges get the 30* angles.

I decided to make the cabinet taller, and install Xovers underneath, as that makes them not look so short and fat.

We'll see how it goes, and you'll all love the color-scheme.....

You could make the outboard X-overs smaller versions of the speakers - maybe even as stands using a triangular column painted to match. Whatever you come up with, paint the word Shakti on them and someone will eventually offer you thousands for them!:D
