    Re: "Trichotomy"- Progress...

Well- turns out I didn't account enough for the thickness of the panels when used in a triangular box. I'm glad I made the cabinet taller for this reason alone, but it also means that the xover will have less headroom. I have an idea to fix that issue, so I should still be ahead of the game on construction- more on that later, and I get to use my 1" RO bit! I also will implement another idea I had in the last couple days to give the port-exit a roundover, even though its outside the box.

So, since Photobucket is now cooperating, here's what I have so far. I have the other cab ready to glue up, so it'll follow suit shortly.

First off- the JIG!! There was no other way to cut the 30 deg angle cuts and have them straight, so I made a jig, and they are very straight!!!

Set the blade to 29.5 deg to keep the gap from happening gluing the miters up, and cut with maybe a 1/32" left on the edge to smooth out post glue-up.
A couple strap-clamps, and it was all done.

The port wasn't as easy as first thought. I used a 1-7/8" Forstner bit to bore, which is a hair tight for the sched-40 PVC 1.5" pipe. First cut kinda tore at the edge, but after it flattened out I was able to slowly bore it a hole. I used a dremel and the 'tungsten wood-shaping wheel' (second pic below) bit to remove excess material and allow it a snug fit all the way through.

Some more good news- the D5G will fit in the box without any modifications. If it'd been recessed, I'd have to cut some reliefs in the side panels to get it to rest on the baffle easily.

    Thanks for looking!

Is the end of that port gonna be sawed off? or just left sticking out?

It was going to be just sticking out originally, but it won't be when I'm finished. I have to dress it up a bit more.

You'll have to wait and see....

No reason to me for a box to be a simple, plain, and rectangular prism. I try and stretch my woodworking skills with almost every project I build- just to see if I can do it!!!

This project needed height to get both drivers on the face and to keep the volume low as the inherent compromise, I decided to make it triangular to accomplish that. It also
                helped with port placement.

I thank you for the compliment, Chris! It's appreciated.

Re: "Trichotomy"- an oddly non-disparate design...

                      Those look familiar.

They have 3-ways with the same drivers as my active Pyramids in process. I used the pentagonal prism shells (the pics show the upper pentagonal prisms covered with grille cloth socks) as the outer baffles for a three way box. So visually they are identical. I'll just plug in the Speakon 8-way connectors and setup a new config in the DCX.

For the last few years things have been pretty busy and I haven't had the opportunity to make lots of dust. I've got the itch now. Plus I'm not done exploring how to make lots of bass. Last time I tried something out we cracked the drywall in the room. I'm thinking >>6dB more. iirc we were at ~150dB at 53Hz on a Termlab sensor. Keep the individual driver displacement low (and spl by definition, to more survivable levels) and distortion drops really really fast.

I like your solution to the mitered joints on the cabinets. We discussed trying tetrahedral and octahedral cabinets but the angles (as you've discovered) don't lend themselves to easy production.

I don't recall seeing any mention of the planned finish. Is that the finish you're going to use?

That looks somewhat like the backsplash tiles we used in our Kitchen. I think a tile finish would be really neat. Definitely work though.

The baffles alone will be the 'Black Marble' Formica you see here. The rest of the cabinet has another intended finish or 2. I haven't posted what that will be, so no I've not mentioned it.

                          As to the sound;
I took them baffle-only over to Matt's last week, and we made up a makeshift 'isolation' with foam and polyfil just to get a feel for it. Granted the bass will be weaker in that setup, so the BG was a tad hot, but other than that, I didn't feel they had anything inherently wrong with them. I may have to tweak the LCR on the woofer a tad to see what I like best, and then check the pad on the BG, but it's sounding like a good combo.

It's just countertop Formica. Faux 'Black Marble' from either Wilsonart or Formica brand laminate. I came into a ton of sink cutouts in swap for a set of speakers awhile back, and I slowly use it up, mainly for baffles. You may be able to get scraps from your local kitchen contractors, or order it but it gets more costly that way. Alsa Corp also has options that are similar.

I got the other one finished to the same point. Now I have the inner bottoms installed, the ports, I did the edge treatments, and now I'm ready for the external tops and the bottoms.

Edge chamfers, same angle that cut the miters:

Boring!!! (It's stopped for the pic.)

The second port is currently gluing up, so I should be able to start on the rest this week.
