  • Re: sony buyout

Does anyone remember the "sweet sixteens" from way back in the day? I think this sony buyout would be a great candidate for a newage sweet sixteen!

I had the original PE article as a kid...
It wasn't long before the intrinsic problems were being addressed with mods.

Hmm is that do to poor quality of products or construction? Alot has happened in the last 50yrs!

Limited HF due to using FR pin-cushions.
But more significantly the inevitable lobing from using a cluster of drivers arrayed in that manner.

Lobing was my thought too, but i thought given these frames they can be mounted touching one another in a 21" square. Then it would act as one speaker instead of 16 individuals. I saw that old article that they were spaced out a bit and could cause lobing. And for the HF issue...cant we just incorporate a tweeter? :p

The addition of the tweeter was the first mod.
Unfortunately just getting individual drivers as close as possible does not eliminate the Ka relationship and guarantee wave cohesiveness.
21" is equal to 1/2 wavelength of 320Hz.
The separated drivers start exhibiting the effects destructive interference when the spacing exceeds 90 degrees of separation and full cancellation at 180 degree points.
As the human ear has evolved to be more acute in the horizontal plane; this is much more audible in the horizontal plane.
This array would have to be "phased" or adjusted for phase shift ( see Don Keele's CBT )

Did you finish them? How do they sound? I just ordered a case of the drivers, and I'm planning on building something similar, but using some piezo horn tweeters I have kicking around.

With as many people buying up these drivers, we really have no choice but to make some pretty nice designs out of them, lol.

I do think the WWMTMWW I'm working on will be just what the doctor ordered.

they will sound good but they do need crossover. It's a work in progress and I'll update all info as it goes.

I'm excited. I figured out that if you cross the woofers with a 2nd order Linkwitz-Reily lowpass (2500hz), the peak at 5khz disappears, allowing me to run the full range without ill effects.

If you want an idea for the 5k peak, try cutting the dust cap off one and replacing it with a piece of cardboard, or a phase plug - chunk of 1" dowel.

                            I thought it might...

At 2500Hz that driver's Ka is about 2.9 and should provide fairly good dispersion.

The 2.5k lowpass flattens the response up to 5k, and kills frequencies past that. The piezos I have are good above about 4k, so that works.

What are your exact crossover values? Is that resonance going to be acceptable if tamed, or is a resonance still undesirable and should be tanked entirely like I've been doing?

For some reason, in my mind I think of a cone resonance with that kind of a peak as a bit of distortion. Reducing that and to me, its still distortion, so I put together a crossover that tanks it entirely.

Then there's the issue of that big bump at 1.5khz, and flattening that, I end up crossing somewhere down at around 2500 to keep crossover costs low.
