  • Re: sony buyout

So any word on running these full range with the phase plug? Also what size box? I might be able to go get some this weekend!

I've decided not to go the OBLA (Open Baffle Line Array) route. Instead, I made an OB MTM with a Bose driver as the tweeter.I managed to get it to sound decent with just a cap on the tweeter and an inductor on the woofer, but eventually I'm gonna get proper crossover components. I'll post pics at some point.

Will likely start my build thread once the cabs are ready to measure. I am thinking I will need some input on these 2-way bookshelves I am doing.

Here's the picture I promised: It's a pretty simple design, and I designed the crossover through trial and error (I had a bunch of random inductors and capacitors, the cap is 3.3uf, and the value of the inductor is unknown).

So im thinking about doing a 12 per side line array with 1 tweeter in each doing

              mmmmtmmmmmmmm

for tweeters im thinking a pair of one of the below im liking the first one and then idk for crossovers input!!

I threw in a bunch of the Sony buyouts in a recent PE order so that I could bump the order up enough to get free shipping and use the coupon code. Now I have 32 of these things sitting in my garage with the intention of doing a set of "garage line arrays."

Just FYI - I scooped up 4 of the Constant Directivity Horns and 3 of them were not glued properly. The waveguide slipped right off. I wasn't impressed with the construction or the appearance of these, but.....I have not tested them yet, so I can't complain too much...yet.

I actually like the Vifa BC25SC15-04 that you pointed out. I may do an exchange or just get a pair of those to test with the Sony's.

Both tweeters go low enough to allow a crossover point that will help tame the nasty 5k hump issue with the Sony drivers. I'm nowhere close to starting my project....but I will be lurking here for info.

i think im going to go with either of the vifa's i like a more smooth tweeters i think the pa one might be a lil bright/harsh.... any one experiment and figure what a good box volume is ? or designs crossover network

Glad this thread came back to life, I have a couple cases of these I need to get rid of......

OK so this will probably get shot right down, but I saw this and wondered how they would work together.....

How about for a super budget 2-way MT with the sony buyout and one of these:

With spare XO parts that I have laying around, I mocked up this crossover with the Constant Directivity Horn in mind.

For an 8ohm configuration - second order on the horn with a 3db L-pad and 3rd order on the mid, crosses over around 2100hz. Just a thought at the moment...I have the parts but not the time to test right now.

im not good at crossover ! i need some one to assist me in 12 line with one of these ! 4 ohm or 8 final load

I figured I'd add another image to build some more interest in getting out the tools to try something.

Took about 8 hours to put together a pair of really rough line arrays to supply music at a party.
(I know they are crude, and have a completely unknown frequency response, but they did the job for the weekend.)

Now, I can put in a proper crossover and make them really shine. I have the advantage of being able to measure them and adjust as I need.

I wired the 8 sony drivers in series/parallel to result in a 4 ohm load. The piezo tweeters were MCM buyouts...
They are supposed to be good down to about 1800Hz. I'll see when I start measuring them. I put two sets of three in series to attempt to
match efficiencies to the Sony drivers. I think they are close. Again, I'll need to measure and add padding as needed.

The enclosures are 1/2 inch plywood, roughly 10 1/2 x 11 x 48 inches. They are stuffed with fiberfill pillow stuffing from Walmart.
The front panels are removable, so I can easily experiment. I may add some grill cloth at some point, so it does not matter if the drivers are front mounted.

Obviously, the line arrays are very directional, but that worked for the room they were to be used in.

The project was intended to be really inexpensive. So please, no flames, not yet anyways.

                          Joe L.

nice ! how do you like them horns?

how was the over output? and did the horns pair well with the sony's ? or was it overwhelming tweeter! ?

i was reading every one wants 1 or 2 tweeters per speaker if there doing 8 to 12 mids you have 6 tweeters to 8 mid's ! hows that ratio working?

more input on a simple crossover over for just 12 of the woofers and then i could do just a simple tweeter highpass crossover ?

Actually, since there are two sets of three tweeters in series, each tweeter is only getting 1/3 of the voltage.
I would guess then each series set of 3 is roughly equivalent to the output of a single tweeter,
just distributed over their combined length. Think of it closer to the output of 2 tweeters for 8 woofers.

You are correct though, I can probably just put together something that crosses over about 2500 Hz on the woofers,
probably a second order, and see how that works letting the piezo tweeters run full range.
