12 will give you a 6 ohm system impedance, not 4 or 8.

You would make 4 groups. Each group consists of 3 drivers in series for 24 ohms. You would put the 4 groups in parallel for 6 ohms.

so if i wire all 12 to 6 ohms add a 4 ohm vifa tweeter and just cap it off at around 3khz and do a band pass crossover on the sonys aroun 80hz to 4khz that be about good you think ?

          Hi newbie here.

I am interested in this build. Already have 24 of the Sonys.

          Any progress

Both tweeters go low enough to allow a crossover point that will help tame the nasty 5k hump issue with the Sony drivers. I'm nowhere close to starting my project....but I will be lurking here for info.
I actually liked this tweeter a bit more:

Having heard it, I can vouch for its performance. I prefer it due to ease of flush mounting it over the truncated frame. Significantly easier to create a recess for.

I'm still waiting on r-carpenter to chime in on his progress with his line array.

At .69 cents a piece these would make some cheap, awsume 300-500 yard varmit rifle targets or 100-150 yards black powder rifle targets or paint the dust caps in the center white and use them for a 100 yard .22 cal target. Use some to make speakers to listen to music while you were shooting the others.

What an absolutely amazing multipurpose unit. Man,it's been a good day today!

If I knew what all that technical lingo you guys have been using meant, there would be no end to what all I could do with these.:D

                That's the tweeter I'm going with too...using 8 of the Sony's.

Project is a bit on the back burner. I am getting my "Alice" ready for NY/NJ DIY in the end of October. I'll get back on that after. Sorry.

I'm building an open baffle design with 12 midwoofers and a single Vifa XT25 tweeter. I completed the baffles today and I should have time tomorrow to install the drivers and begin the crossover. I'll post updates as I test different crossover designs. In the picture that's linked below the new design is the one on the left, not the veneered one on the right

When done, could you compare with the foster OB array you built a few years ago somewhat inspired by a foster/apexjr array I constructed around that time ?

The AudioFred Sony FrugalArrays are up and running. As I anticipated, the woofer array's frequency response is very different from the response of a single point source woofer. The comb filter effect in this array begins at about 1khz, and after trying various woofer filters I found they sound best running full range. I'm using a third order crossover on the Vifa Xt25 tweeter.

                        Here's the link to a picture: http://fredt300b.smugmug.com/Hobbies...196823_37hRx64

I don't know how to post the frequency response graphs here, but you can see them in this thread at the AudioRoundTable forum. http://audioroundtable.com/forum/ind...16614&start=0&

The sound is better than I expected. The midbass is strong enough that they don't sound anemic. The only significant downside I hear is the 3/4" mdf baffle with no bracing is very resonant. If this were a serious project I would use two panels glued together to make a 1.5" baffle.

This array sound much better than the 14 woofer Foster array I described in a previous post. I has used a small waveguide with a compression driver, and this tweeter would not respond low enough to integrate with the woofer array, resulting in a hollow sound.

Which exact tweeter did you use? Is it this one?

I might just do the same when building my own. Could you also provide the crossover diagram for the tweeter? I don't think the Vifa tweeter I mentioned earlier will play as low as the one you used and I really don't have time to design something else right now.

First, I love the name -- good job there. I've got a case of these little beauties and have been waiting for someone to "solve the riddle" before I start cutting wood. Are you going to continue developing these, or do you think the project is worth the effort? I may have missed a comment earlier, but at the risk of asking a question the lawyers would argue has been "asked and answered," do you think the open baffle design is the best approach, from an acoustic standpoint? Do the AudioFred Sony Frugal Arrays produce the benefits the open baffle devotees describe, to any significant degree?

I'll be following your work with great interest... By the way, can you post the frequency response graphs on your photo hosting site? I couldn't get anything on the AudioRoundTable Forum.

I think the audioroundtable bitmap images fail to render correctly on some browsers. I "extracted" the images and converted them to pngs. Here they are.
