    Re: sony buyout

I think somewhere around 4k with a coil on the woofers and capacitor on the tweeter/s
DSP with equalizer would be a great advantage to correct for drivers linear performance. Nonlinear and x-max will not be an issue in array.
I think tweeter solution could depend on application of a line itself. Array of tweeters or a singe high efficiency tweeter could work. Line of ribbons would do the trick just great.
I also have to say that 4 mid size arrays would make a KILLER home theater.
Can we put these drivers in a closed box?

I've seen 4k used for small CTC, but for these: I'd go lower with a more aggressive slope.

I agree that planars/ribbons would be better

        Re: sony buyout

only problem with ribbons is the cost. Inexpensive ribbons or other hi frequency line sources work well in higher range over 5k which is not low enough for these Sonys. Pricy ribbons that can go in to 3k area are just that, pricy. My guess that for a mid sized line array in this particular case, single high efficiency tweeter would be quite ok. I mean, the idea here is to do an outstanding sound on the cheap so, spending 2k on a line of Founteks or 20k on the line of Ravens to butter up $25 worth of Sonys may not be such a great thing.
Not sure about more aggressive slops tho. Horizontal dispersion of a line array is much less affected by tilting in the crossover region. But, it's just that, I am not sure.
May be I'll order a case of these to play. You guys suck, I have so many projects in works and now I am interested in one more.

I think Mr. Carpenter has detailed the conundrum; which is why I couldn't get excited about using these pin-cushions.

Using smaller drivers has advantages in this scenario.

for a budget approach, I think I'd probably try these:

with 8 woofers per side, 4 above, 4 below...I'd rear mount the drivers with a nice 1/2" roundover on the front of the baffle....

Think I'll try. I have a Jordan line to compare to so it may actually be somewhat interesting. And these Sonys are soooooo inexpensive. May be with a small line of buyout tweeters? Silk domes come up in a buyout section from time to time. Will see. I also want to listen to a dipole array, so these are perfect candidates.

yep something like that would work.
4w/1t/4w will do it for a semi line source.

                Pity ND90s aren't that cheap...
                With the "right" tweeters - a Solen AP016 would provide a simple active 2 way system with a 24db ( 4th order rate ).

I threw mine on the woofer tester after spending some time flexing the cone in and out as far as it would go. We either have a major consistency problem (likely in a driver such as these), or PE and Arlis did not break their samples in enough. Hmmm... Wish I had another sample to test, now.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

you are correct sir. i did not break in the driver.

how do these look for tweets? im very curious about making a massive line array with these buyouts. 24 drivers for just over $16! plus tweets, and components. you are looking at about $50 for a line array pair! of course these wont be audiophile grade by any means, but they sure would make some wicked garage/party speakers! did someone say Vas was .1cuft?

for a 12 driver array OD 70"X7"X7" using 3/4" material will have an interior volume of 1.2cuft. any more ideas?

The 3" CTC is too wide on the 1st example.
With the 2nd: the 4.35" CTC is even greater and further limited by the 4k low point on bandpass.

Arlis, if you get a minute all I did was flex the cone back and forth thirty or forty times. You can actually bottom it out that way. I would like to see how close they are after break in.

With the one I measured, it looks doable in 0.3 cubic feet sealed and stuffed heavily for an F3 in the mid 70's, perfect for sitting on top of a bass bin.

well, I just ordered 3 cases of these Sonys. Will remeasure TS on a few and do acoustic measurements on the baffle.

No, but I have a few laying around. Some horn tweeters, planars and silk domes.
Target will lay around 3k and I may also experiment with curved focused arrays. We'll see.
