  • Re: sony buyout

Well since I ordered the same tweeter, I suppose I could use the zma and frd files for it. It'll give me a chance to play around with crossover design.

Got a crossover designed for the 12 driver + Vifa array!

If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

Many years ago, I did an open baffle array with foster woofers that had similar specs. Still works great.

You guys have no idea how hard it is for me not to buy a bunch of these.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

            Johnny, just do it....

my thinking was maybe a 2nd order L-R crossover coming in at about 3k would tame most of that bump at around 6khz, and end up with a decent 4th order slope beyond that, allowing for a fairly high crossover point?

The 2nd order works nicely, but still doesn't completely tame that peak. I suppose I could try a higher crossover point for the TM design, but for the line array, I wanted to stay a bit low at 2500.

After spending some time yesterday trying to model a crossover for a line array for these, I realized something. I'm sitting there trying really hard to tame a breakup at 5-6k, and just remembered that it was mentioned earlier in this thread that this could be caused by the frame ringing due to it being so thin and flimsy.

R-carpenter, would you mind testing one of these again with some caulk or some type of dampening on the frame to see if this is indeed the case? Should make modeling a crossover for one of these 10x easier if we don't have to deal with that spike.

I'll create a thread for my crossover designs once I can get another frequency response measurement with the frame dampened.

I'm thinking of doing a TM, MTM, and a 12-driver line array.

I'll be working with the driver on Wednesday.
But the spike is a cone resonance. 100%, no question about it. It's a duck, it quacks.
Frame has it's own problems as well and I have a few ideas.

Would those ideas involve the equivalent of one of my 3 rolls of automotive sound deadening in my garage?

Thanks for clarifying that. Back to the crossover drawing board.

                          not necessarily.
Frame wings are wide enough and create reflecting surface. So, you have reflection gong back between the rear of the diaphragm a frame wings. Begs the question if placing sound absorbent foam will improve CSD (which I have yet to get clear for work related reasons). Frame also rings audibly at higher input voltage. So, that can be compensated with some silicone. But, I'll try and measure and bring the results for observation.

Are you of the opinion that this resonance would not be an issue if a more aggressive 24db 4th order LP was use?

Yes, 4th order electrical filter will surely roll it off. But we are going back to the summed up response, tweeter efficiency and capability. Hard to say at this point.
Let me throw an array of 12 on a piece of MDf, measure it and then we can see more clearly.
BTW Sydney, I think you should get a case of these. Cheap, good for experiments and if you don't like them, you'll never be short of an ashtray.

I would try a very harsh notch filter first and use that to tailor top end.
